  • Professional Organizational Unit Overview The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a distinguished research and teaching facility of East Carolina University School of Medicine, consisting of approximately 50 people.
This department provides an academic base for teacher-scientists employed by the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in the disciplines of microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and other related disciplines. The department provides instruction to medical students and dental students, and provides instruction, guidance, and research experience to Ph.D. and M.S. students seeking degrees in microbiology and immunology. The department also offers a postdoctoral research training program. The department supports an array of faculty-directed research programs of which many are supported by extramural grants and/or contracts. The department provides service to the school, university, state, nation, and profession through the activities of faculty members on committees, study sections, in professional organizations, as consultants, and through other activities. Job Duties This position will provide technical assistance to other laboratory members in using genetic
  • molecular
  • and biochemical-based strategies to study how Brucella strains regulate their genes and produce disease in their mammalian hosts.
These studies require work under Biosafety Level 2 and 3 containment, and experimental infections are performed in cellular and mouse models. Primary Research Responsibilities Conducts molecular biology and biochemical research to support NIH-funded projects involving pathogenic bacteria and host interactions under Biosafety Level 2 and 3 conditions. Performs laboratory techniques including bacteriology, recombinant DNA methods, protein purification, and preparation of samples for RNAseq, proteomics, ChIP-seq, and HiC analysis. Conducts experimental procedures involving mammalian cell cultures and animal models, including infection studies and immunization protocols. Analyzes and interprets experimental data to support research objectives and ongoing studies. Collaborates with laboratory personnel to support research activities and integrate findings across projects. Presents research findings in lab meetings and contributes to discussions on data interpretation and future study design. Assists in the preparation of research manuscripts and scientific presentations for publication and professional conferences. Communicates research progress and results regularly with the Principal Investigator. Laboratory Operations & Compliance Maintains laboratory inventory by ensuring adequate stock of supplies and coordinating ordering and receipt of materials. Tracks and manages purchasing records, including documentation of orders and processing of receipts. Ensures compliance with safety and regulatory requirements related to the handling and disposal of biological and radiation materials. Minimum Education/Experience Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
