Job Description

Job Description - Molecular Technologist Summary Performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Works independently under established protocols and maintains quality and safety standards within the laboratory. Essential Functions (duties include, but are not limited to) Follows established procedures and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis. Performs analytical molecular tests and procedures, recognizes deviations from expected results, and takes appropriate action to ensure accuracy and precision. Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results; reviews QC data and takes corrective actions as needed. Recognizes abnormal test results and provides information regarding methodology, specificity, sensitivity, and potential influencing factors. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment; recognizes malfunctions, troubleshoots, and performs basic repairs. Assists with evaluation of new techniques and procedures, including method comparisons, cost analysis, and procedure documentation. Maintains adequate supplies; participates in ordering and inventory monitoring. Ensures proper calibration and functioning of laboratory equipment and monitors routine maintenance. Participates in training and orientation of new staff when needed. Ability to cover various shifts if required. Qualifications and Experience Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in medical technology, molecular biology, or related science with completion of an accredited clinical laboratory program. Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) licensure, or eligibility. Demonstrated ability to work accurately, efficiently, and collaboratively in a team setting. Basic knowledge of word processing, database, and laboratory information systems. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific/technical journals and lab results. Familiarity with statistical concepts and ability to apply them in laboratory QC. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to follow technical instructions. Experience with all patient age groups preferred. Physical Demands Regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to handle or feel specimens and equipment. Frequently required to sit, reach, and communicate effectively. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Vision requirements include close and distance vision. Work Environment Exposure to wet/humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, sharps, blood, and bodily fluids. Moderate noise level typical of laboratory settings. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Minimum Requirements Must be at least 18 years of age at hire. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards. Knowledge of laboratory solutions, reagents, and materials. Ability to follow instructions and comply with accreditation and certification requirements. Knowledge of laboratory cleaning procedures and equipment maintenance.
