Job Description

Position Summary:
The Microbiology Coordinator will be responsible for assisting the Microbiology Manager in the technical operations of the Microbiology department.
Education:
A bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution is required. Transcripts are required for education verification.
License:
For roles in Pennsylvania, NYSDOH licensure, or eligible for licensure, is preferred but not required. For roles in New York, NYSDOH licensure is required.
Certification:
ASCP certification is preferred but not required. A minimum of 12 CEUs must be earned each year.
Experience:
For roles in Pennsylvania, 6-years direct experience in clinical laboratory Microbiology is required. For roles in New York, 4-years direct experience in clinical laboratory Microbiology is required.
Essential Functions:
Supervises all aspects of the technical performance of personnel assigned to Microbiology on all shifts, including, but not limited to training, initial assessment, and competency evaluations. Performs routine and advanced testing functions productively, competently and proficiently in the Microbiology department. Maintains skills and proficiency with testing in all Microbiology sections and can assist any employee with technical or procedural problems. Assists in continuing education, including planning, leading, and presenting material to caregivers. Assists the Microbiology Manager with scheduling. Assists the Microbiology Manager with proficiency testing oversight. Responsible for the technical performance and documentation of all regulatory requirements, including proficiency testing. Ensures proper equipment operation and maintenance, quality control, logs and temperatures are completed along with monthly review documented. Maintains appropriate inventory of reagents/chemicals/supplies within the department. Orders supplies as needed. Documents reagent lots and expirations dates as needed for testing. Maintains personnel training, competency records, and continuing education as required. Maintains department policies and procedures. Ensures the department is in compliance with all regulatory agencies and requirements. In partnership with the Microbiology Manager and Medical Director, implements a departmental quality assurance program with documentation. Conducts validation and testing of all equipment, instruments, and procedures as needed. Observes proper safety practices in the performance of job duties and is responsible for the proper safety practices within the department. Other duties as required.
