What You Will Do The successful candidate will support and develop efforts using LANL's ultra-trace level Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) capabilities. Focus areas will include environmental monitoring, threat reduction and nonproliferation, nuclear forensics, and isotope geochemistry and basic science investigations. In addition, the mass spectrometrist will strongly contribute to the growth and productivity of the team by developing novel techniques needed for analysis of new analytes, application streamlining, and maximizing sample throughput. Working with peers, the spectrometrist will be responsible for the development, implementation, and completion of project objectives and will communicate results through internal reports, progress reports, formal presentations, and peer reviewed publications. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Scientist 2 ($106,400-$176,000) The successful candidate will be required to operate and maintain equipment associated with the LANL Trace Analytical Chemistry and Mass Spectrometry capability. This includes the operation and maintenance of multi-collector ICP-MS instrumentation as well as support other analytical and cleanroom equipment. Additionally, the candidate will work closely with other capability areas within the Trace Analytical Chemistry team (e.g., Low-Level Radiochemistry and TIMS sub teams) to develop a better integrated approach to work execution. The selected candidate will be required to work closely with customers, team members, and managers to develop priorities and ensure execution of work deliverables including the development of novel scientific solutions to analytical problems in national security, international safeguards, and nuclear forensics areas. The candidate will be required to present work through formal presentations, internal reports, and peer reviewed publications. Scientist 3 ($128,000-$215,000) In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the Scientist 3 will be reported to have expert level experience working with multi-collector ICPMS instrumentation. The candidate will provide input into strategic planning for this capability area. They must have demonstrated experience writing proposals and successfully securing funding for scientific efforts. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements- Demonstrated "hands-on" experience in mass spectrometry analysis of ultra-trace materials using ICP-MS
- Significant knowledge and experience working with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry instrumentation
- Experience developing new approaches to solve unique scientific problems
- Experience writing proposals and interfacing with customers
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with colleagues to develop scientific direction
- Experience working in a dynamic multi-disciplinary team environment, as well as the ability to work independently with initiative

- Demonstrated ability to lead capability and programmatic focus and direction Education/Experience at lower level: Positions requires a Bachelors degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Masters degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working in a cleanroom environment
- Working knowledge of ion exchange chemistry and separation techniques
- Experience working with radiological samples and in a radiological environment and/or radiochronometry applications
- Experience working with instrument vendors on troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance
