Job Summary:
The Assistant Medical Physicist supports Medical Physicists in performing routine clinical medical physics tasks to ensure safe and efficient radiation therapy operations. Core responsibilities include, but not limited to, treatment-related quality assurance, participation in machine QA and commissioning activities, patient-specific QA, and support of radiation safety functions under the direct supervision of a Medical Physicist.Other information:
Required Job Qualifications:
a. Bachelor's degree in physics or related field required Eligibility to work with radiation-emitting devices as required by state and federal regulations. c. Ability to operate complex equipment and troubleshoot minor problems. d. Acceptable computer skills level including familiarity with Windows, MS office, MS Teams, etc. e. Has the ability to operate specialized equipment and handling of radioactive materials; ability to handle heavy equipment and devices required for clinical tasks.Preferred Job Qualifications:
a. Master's degree in physics, Medical Physics, Engineering, or related field Currently enrolled in a graduate program or holder of bachelor's degree in sciences or math. c. 2 years of laboratory or scientific research experience. d. Experience with programing languages; Python, C#, MATLAB , Origin, SQL , etc.Physical Demands:
a.Ability to perform light work:
(standing, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, reaching, handling, finger manipulation, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, eye-hand coordination). Ability to lift or carry objects up to 35 pounds.Competencies:
a. Possesses good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision while fostering good collaboration with Radiation Oncology staff. c. Possesses good organizational skills and interpersonal skills necessary to work with a diverse group of people. Maintain courteous, helpful and professional behavior always. Promote teamwork by working together with other department staff. d. Must be self-motivated and must be able to use time and institutional resources effectively and judiciously. e. Possesses the ability to promote compliance and comply with all policies, standard operating procedures, and regulations related to routine clinical operations. f. Job Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of Director of Medical Physics or delegated physicists, participate in the QA, commissioning and acceptance testing of every therapy equipment according to all industry standards. Supports as needed in the following broad duties: a. Morning QA calibrations for all therapy equipment as assigned by Medical Physicist. Proficiently utilizes radiation measuring equipment, treatment planning computers, and EMR systems. c. Helps in treatment related workflow throughout the patient treatment process in making immobilization, and block devices as needed. d. Ensures a robust understanding of RO- EMR (Aria) and efficiently uses the care path clinical workflow. e. Participates in daily, monthly, and annual machine QA under supervision. f. Conducts patient-specific QA forIMRT / VMAT
plans as assigned. g. Assists with in-vivo and in-vitro dosimetry measurements usingTLD / OSLD , MOSFET
, ion chambers, and other detectors. h. Supports commissioning and acceptance testing of therapy equipment according to established standards. Under close supervision of the Medical Physicist, participate in treatment planning activities. j. Participates in the evaluation of autonomous, unsupervised radiotherapy planning systems and activities k. Assists with Radiation Safety related tasks required by department and hospital along with a Qualified Medical Physicist ( QMP ). l. Assembles, prepares and coordinates activities related to the readiness of applicators and devices used for HDR Brachytherapy. m. Supports workflow tasks such as fabrication of immobilization devices. n. Participate in the training of new physics staff as requested. o.
