Examples of guidance include:
reviewing and approving proposed work and design documents; planning moderate-to-high hazard radiological work and specifying work controls. Health Physicist Level 3 ($117,200 - $195,400) In addition to the duties outlined above, the Health Physicist 3 will be required to provide advanced technical support, technical assistance and guidance on large-scope and/or complex radiological control problems, recommending and assuring implementation of corrective actions (including changes in the work environment) when necessary. You will act as lead or technical advisor on large complex projects related to radiation protection, such as projects which may have significance for the radiation protection program and/or Lab operability and goals. You may conduct radiation protection research in specialty areas and develop reports to ensure and maintain the excellence of the Laboratory's radiation protection program, potentially including the development and application of cutting edge technologies to enhance the Laboratory's radiation protection practice and performance and, where appropriate, to benefit industry or the field of health physics. As a Level 3, you might also participate in the development of national or international standards for radiation protection and provide advanced technical guidance in functional area to radiation protection division, ALDESHQSS directorate and/or Laboratory management.What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:
Health Physicist Level 2: Demonstrated experience with a variety of radiological controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements. Working knowledge of radiological safety policies, practices, and procedures. Working knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting radiological safety/protection. Demonstrated experience and skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel. Demonstrated experience in the preparation and presentation of radiological safety/protection reports. Demonstrated experience providing radiation protection support for high energy proton accelerator operations and associated experimental user programs. Additional Job Requirements for Health Physicist Level 3: In addition to needing knowledge and experience in the requirements above, the Level 3 Health Physicist will need: Advanced experience with the development and implementation of programs to meet 10 CFR 835, 10 CFR 20, and 49 CFR requirements. Advanced experience managing diverse radiation safety issues. Advanced experience with radiological controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements. Health Physicist Level 2Education Required:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Health Physicist Level 3Education Required:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable. Professional certification is desired.Desired Qualifications:
Certification as a Health Physicist is desireable. The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Some domestic/foreign travel may be required.Work Schedule:
This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.Position commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
