Health Physicist Level 2 or Level 3

What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the Health Physicist 2/Health Physicist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Health Physicist Level 2 ($106,400 - $176,000) Utilize your radiation protection (RP) skills to do something that matters! Los Alamos National Laboratory-one of the most innovative and creative multidisciplinary research institutions in the world-is looking for and experienced radiation protection professional to support Linear Accelerator Operations at the LANSCE facility. This is a unique opportunity with greate growth potential to support national and global security. You will be responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating research, training and monitoring programs to protect Laboratory personnel from radiation hazards while ensuring that radiation protection policies and procedures are incorporated into Laboratory activities. You will ensure compliance with industry standards pertaining to radiation protection and lead projects with medium complexity, and/or scope, with minimal direct supervision. As an HP2 you will also research, develop and implement technical basis documents, policies and procedures in such technical areas as: inspection standards, safe-work methods, decontamination procedures, and radiological emergency procedures. Providing technical guidance in functional areas to customers and to less-experienced health physicists and radiation protection technicians will also be within your scope of responsibility.

Examples of guidance include:

reviewing and approving proposed work and design documents; planning moderate-to-high hazard radiological work and specifying work controls. Health Physicist Level 3 ($117,200 - $195,400) In addition to the duties outlined above, the Health Physicist 3 will be required to provide advanced technical support, technical assistance and guidance on large-scope and/or complex radiological control problems, recommending and assuring implementation of corrective actions (including changes in the work environment) when necessary. You will act as lead or technical advisor on large complex projects related to radiation protection, such as projects which may have significance for the radiation protection program and/or Lab operability and goals. You may conduct radiation protection research in specialty areas and develop reports to ensure and maintain the excellence of the Laboratory's radiation protection program, potentially including the development and application of cutting edge technologies to enhance the Laboratory's radiation protection practice and performance and, where appropriate, to benefit industry or the field of health physics. As a Level 3, you might also participate in the development of national or international standards for radiation protection and provide advanced technical guidance in functional area to radiation protection division, ALDESHQSS directorate and/or Laboratory management.

What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:

Health Physicist Level 2: Demonstrated experience with a variety of radiological controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements. Working knowledge of radiological safety policies, practices, and procedures. Working knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting radiological safety/protection. Demonstrated experience and skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel. Demonstrated experience in the preparation and presentation of radiological safety/protection reports. Demonstrated experience providing radiation protection support for high energy proton accelerator operations and associated experimental user programs. Additional Job Requirements for Health Physicist Level 3: In addition to needing knowledge and experience in the requirements above, the Level 3 Health Physicist will need: Advanced experience with the development and implementation of programs to meet 10 CFR 835, 10 CFR 20, and 49 CFR requirements. Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Health Physicist Level 3

Education Required:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable. Professional certification is desired.

Desired Qualifications:

Certification as a Health Physicist is desireable. Work Environment:

Domestic/foreign travel, operation of motor vehicles, work near sources of ionizing radiation, , headgear or head protection, safety glasses or eye protection, hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective footgear.

Work Location:

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Some domestic/foreign travel may be required.

Work Schedule:

This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance:

Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Eligibility requirements:

To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test:

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
