Job Description

General Job Description:
The Medical Physicist is a member of the radiation oncology team who ensures the highest quality and safety in the delivery of radiation therapy. Their knowledge and expertise is used to verify the accurate delivery of treatment plans and ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state radiation regulations involving quality checks, inspections, maintenance, and calibrations of radiation producing equipment. Knowledgeable of all aspects of radiation oncology. Have strong oral and written skills, able to work independently, and pay strict attention to detail. This position requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Experience Requirements and Qualifications:
    Education & Qualifications:
    A minimum of a master's degree in medical physics, radiation biology, or closely related discipline and minimum of 3 years of related experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
    Required Licenses/Certifications:
    Must hold valid license from the Texas Medical Board in Medical Physics. Certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Therapeutic Radiological Physics or board eligible. Work Experience Minimum of 3 years' experience in related position, preferably in radiation therapy.
    • Physical Demands & Working ConditionsRequires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Standing and walking for long periods. Occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. Requires exposure to bodily fluids.
    • Special RequirementsVerbal and writing ability required to communicate effectively in informing employees of activities and policies.
    Numerical ability required. Ability to receive, comprehend, and carry out instructions; ability to work safely with equipment, supplies, and materials; ability to comply with attendance requirements; ability to comply with Human Resource policies. Experience in conducting quality assurance testing
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Performs or supervises the technical aspects of all procedures necessary to ensure the safe and effective delivery of radiation to patients.
    • Develop procedures for the initial and continual evaluation of radiation therapy treatment, including patient specific quality assurance checks (plan delivery and dose calculation verification, weekly chart checks, as well as physician consultation on the technical aspects of patient setup and planning).
    • Assist in the development or management of the Quality Management Program and Radiation Safety Procedures.
    • Approve radiation technical procedures prior to clinical use.
    • Provide education and guidance in the use of X-rays, advice on the control of radiation hazards, and recommendation of appropriate protective measures.
    • Perform accurate measurement and calibration of the radiation output from radiation-producing sources and generators. Notifying the radiation therapy team of any unsafe use of equipment.
    • Investigate equipment quality performance on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis as required or recommended and documenting them appropriately.
    • Provide evidence of compliance of equipment for radiation therapy treatment and QA; ensuring all equipment calibrations are up to date.
    • Provide assistance to the dosimetry team in importing images, implementing gating techniques, and the fabrication of custom shields and other beam modifying devices.
    • Ensure that safe standards are maintained with regard to dosimetry; assessing the distribution of radiation dose and developing treatment plans in collaboration with members of the radiation oncology team.
    • Supervise, perform, or assist in the use of treatment delivery involving Vision RT.
    • Communicate with the radiation therapists to ensure safe use of the linear accelerator when machine issues occur. Keep in contact with service engineers to rectify the problem.
    • Perform equipment acceptance/commissioning and implementation of new equipment and treatment modalities.
    • Contribute clinical advice and resources to resolve the practical problems of measurement of ionizing radiation under clinical conditions.
    • Provide consultation and collaboration services for other departments using radiation in any form.
    • Travel to other locations as assigned (TCS Arlington and Fort Worth)
    • All other duties assigned by TCS Managers.
    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    Knowledgeable in all aspects of radiation oncology Duties are characteristic of medical physicists working with linear accelerators utilizing state of the art software, hardware, and modern treatment planning techniques.
    • Ability to interpret and maintain standards and regulatory requirements.
    • Ability to actively problem-solve by seeking, developing, and implementing viable solutions.
    • Demonstrate initiative, organization and ownership of daily tasks and projects. Demonstrates interpersonal skills with all levels of the healthcare team.
    • Strong oral and written communications skills. Works well independently and in team environments.
    • Capable of paying strict attention to detail; thorough and well-organized. Superior level of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    • A willingness to go "above and beyond" for their clients and fellow colleagues.
    • Maintains a positive and safe working environment for the customers serviced.
    Xofigo experience is a plus.
