Principal Deputy Director
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, the world's largest medical research facility, is seeking a visionary leader to fill the role of Principal Deputy Director, Office of Intramural Research (OIR). The Intramural Research Program (IRP) is the NIH's internal research program known for its synergistic approach to biomedical science. The IRP consists of approximately 1,200 Principal Investigators and more than 4,000 Postdoctoral Fellows conducting basic, translational, and clinical research. The Principal Deputy Director, OIR advises the Deputy Director for Intramural Research (DDIR) NIH in developing plans, standards, and NIH-wide programs to foster excellence in research and the successful recruitment, development, and retention of world renown scientists of diverse backgrounds.
As the Principal Deputy Director, OIR, you will play a key role in assisting the DDIR in creating an atmosp for open interaction between Institutes and Centers (IC)s on intramural programs by promoting innovative initiatives, inter-Institute collaboration, and shared research services. This individual's role includes specific areas of review authority, such as approval of all new tenure actions within the intramural programs, review and approval of all intramural search committees and candidates for positions as Principal Investigators in the intramural research program, evaluation of the composition of the Boards of Scientific Counselors of the ICs, as well as the quality of the reviews of intramural scientists and of the performance of the Scientific Directors and Clinical Directors of the ICs.
In this role, you will represent the DDIR in carrying out all official duties, including attendance at meetings within and external to the NIH. If needed, the Principal Deputy Director, OIR serves as a liaison with the media, special interest groups, high-ranking scientific and executive officials in other Public Health Service agencies, HHS, other Federal agencies, the academic and private sectors and with members or staff of the Congress. We are looking for applicants committed to managerial excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to help build and lead within a dynamic and diverse organization. Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in the biomedical or behavioral sciences, with broad senior-level scientific research experience and experience in direct administration of a research program. The successful candidate for this Title 42 position will be appointed at a salary commensurate with their qualifications.
