Organization Overview:
The Clear Lake Environmental Research Center (CLERC) is an environmental nonprofit organization based in Lake County, California. We serve as a steward for the environmental and economic sustainability of Clear Lake, its neighboring lands and waters, and local communities. CLERC conducts applied environmental research to better understand Clear Lake's ecological history, watershed dynamics, forest health, fire resilience, and biological systems. Our research supports science-based decision-making and informs conservation and community resilience efforts throughout the region.
Position Summary:
The Research Assistant supports the Research Director with the cataloging, documentation, and organization of sediment core samples and related research materials. This entry-level position provides hands-on experience in environmental research methods, archival organization, and scientific data management. This position does not operate in a traditional laboratory setting. Work will take place primarily between CLERC's core sample storage unit and the Carnegie Library in Lakeport, where research materials are being organized and archived. This role is ideal for a community college student or early-career individual seeking practical experience in environmental science, geology, natural resources, or a related field.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Core Sample Cataloging & Archival Organization Inventory, label, and document sediment core samples stored in CLERC's storage facility. Record sample metadata including location, depth, collection date, and condition. Enter catalog information into digital tracking systems or spreadsheets. Assist with organizing research materials and archives at the Carnegie Library location. Ensure materials are stored, labeled, and documented according to established protocols. Research & Documentation Support Assist with basic data entry and quality checks. Support compilation of research notes and historical documentation. Help prepare materials for review by the Research Director. Assist in organizing digital files and maintaining orderly record systems. General Project Support Assist with moving and organizing boxed materials (sediment cores, documents, supplies). Maintain clean, organized, and secure storage areas. Follow established handling procedures to protect sensitive research materials. Participate in team meetings or project discussions as appropriate.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of coursework in environmental science, geology, biology, natural resources, history of science, or related field. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word. Ability to work independently with direction and maintain accurate records. Possess a driver's license and insurance valid in California. Creativity, sense of humor, "can do" spirit, collegiality, flexibility, strong desire to lead.
Preferred Qualifications:
Interest in lake science, sediment analysis, watershed research, or environmental history. Prior experience with data entry, archival organization, or research assistance (academic experience acceptable). Comfort working in non-traditional research environments (storage facilities, archival spaces). Physical Requirements Ability to lift and move boxes up to 30 pounds. Ability to stand, bend, and organize materials for extended periods. Ability to work in environments that may be warm, cool, or dusty.
