Penn Medicine Office of Advanced Practice is actively recruiting Acute Care trained Nurse Practitioners and Masters Prepared Physician Assistants for their inaugural in-patient cardiac surgery-focused Hospital Advanced Practice Fellowship. This 12-month paid postgraduate fellowship is designed to prepare APPs for advanced practice in high-acuity cardiac surgery and critical care environments , with a focus on developing clinical expertise, critical thinking, and leadership within multidisciplinary teams, starting in February 2027.

Friday, July 3rd, 2026 Onsite Interviews TBD - Mid July (Recruiter will update you during screening process) Start date: February 2027 This is a post graduate fellowship program designed for acute care certified nurse practitioners and certified physician assistants who have a lifelong commitment to learning and are seeking a career as Acute/Critical Care Cardiac Surgery Advanced Practice Provider at Penn Medicine as there may be opportunity for employment following the successful completion of this program. The purpose is to train qualified nurse practitioners and physician assistants to function as expert providers in cardiac surgery. This end is facilitated by a robust didactic curriculum and clinical rotations through Penn Medicine acute and critical care cardiac surgery services. Opportunity for applicable elective rotations may be afforded. Department physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants participate as mentor/preceptors in this program. The focus of training is the development of expertise where trainees will participate in 60 hours of work per week (50 clinical and 10 academic hours). At the end of the program a Post Master's certification is granted (3 CUs) from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Upon successful completion of the Fellowship and credentialing through the University of Pennsylvania Medical Board, opportunities for employment may be available. Program Highlights Structured didactic curriculum combined with immersive clinical training Proctored rotations across cardiac surgery and critical care services Opportunities for elective rotations based on interests Emphasis on: Hemodynamic management and advanced monitoring Post-operative cardiac surgery care Mechanical circulatory support (e.g., ECMO, LVAD, IABP) Ventilator management and critical care procedures Dedicated mentorship and preceptorship from experienced providers Average commitment of 60 hours/week (50 clinical and 10 academic hours) Applications are required through the Penn Medicine Career page. Three (3) letters of recommendation: one from your current or recent clinical supervisor/ physician/preceptor, one from an Academic Advisor/Faculty, and one employment supervisor. •All applications will be reviewed by Recruitment and the Program Director, and finalists for the Fellowship position will be contacted to interview up until the deadline. Interviews will take place in July/August. Final selections will be completed by September 2026
Minimum Requirements:
1. Master's prepared Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant 2. Pennsylvania state licensure and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification or master's prepared Physician Assistant is required at time of start . (Must graduate and pass boards and successfully credentialed to begin this program) 3. Ability to commit and work at least 60 hours (includes class time) per week (including nights, weekends, and holidays) for the entire 12-month program. 4.
BLS, ACLS
