This is a part-time, temporary position from approximately September 14, 2026 to December 20, 2026. A part-time intern must be available to work 15 hours per week. This position offers a flexible work schedule, coordinated with the intern's school schedule and operational needs. Preferred working hours are 3-5 hour shifts M-F between 9-5.
DESCRIPTION
We are seeking an intern to support establishing and nurturing trusting, mutually beneficial relationships with LGBTQIA+ communities across the state. We believe that community members are the leaders and producers and owners of their stories and their resources. Community engagement is building relationships in a way that honors that authorship, leadership, and ownership. This internship will focus primarily on supporting the MN Queer History Digital History Map expansion project and events related to the project.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Create strategies for increasing community participation in the MN Queer History Digital History Map expansion project and reach out to potential community partners in Greater MN, with a primary focus on communities whose histories are currently underrepresented in the map, including rural people of color, transgender community members and people with disabilities Research and develop new site content for the project; review site suggestions collected through our online form on a rolling basis Support with event planning and day-of event needs Meet with MNHS staff and attend department meetings as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months at the time of application. Ideal candidates might be currently pursuing, or a graduate with a degree in the following areas: History, Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature, Anthropology, Digital Communication and Media/Multimedia, Sociology, Ethnic Studies Experience and/or training in research technique and best practices, and is comfortable working with primary sources. Experience with digital storytelling is preferred, though not required. Experience with ArcGIS StoryMaps is preferred, though not required. Experience with community engagement and public participation projects. Ability to work occasional weekends.
KNOWLEDGE INTERN IS EXPECTED TO GAIN
Familiarity with MNHS resources. Increased community engagement skills. Research, writing, and editing, best practices and skills building. Experience in a professional museum environment
SEMINAR EVENTS
Interns are require to participate in three, in-person seminars focused on professional development, learning how cultural organizations operate, and building a network of industry professionals. At the end of the semester, interns complete a final presentation to share their work.
