Job Description
Org. Setting and ReportingThe post is located in the Gender Unit in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Department of Peace Operations Peace at the United Nations Headquarters, New York. It reports to a Senior Gender Adviser , who is the Chief of the Gender Unit. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Political/Gender Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
- Gender analysis- Participates in the analysis and development of gender-responsive operational tools and guidance, including the review and analysis of issues and trends at the global, regional and national levels.;
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political and gender issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the countries and thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible.
- Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in Women, Peace and Security and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
- Monitors national and regional level political and developments on gender and Women, Peace and Security provides advice to field mission/UN agencies active on the ground.
- Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of Women, Peace and Security mandates of the office, branch or unit.
- Maintains contacts with other entities of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
- Monitors gender-responsive actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations.
- Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases gender and disaggregated information relating to potential disputes and conflicts involving assigned countries or region.
- Participates in fact-finding on gender and Women, Peace and Security and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
- Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions.
- Prepares meetings of the USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
- Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
- Performs other related duties as required.
