JOB DESCRIPTION

If you are goal oriented, have a passion for wildlife, and know how to help others succeed, then a Wildlife Technician with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is the job for you! As a Wildlife Technician, you will implement the nuisance and depredation program as part of a team of motivated professionals that comply with the mission, goals, and objectives of the DWR. You will also create and strengthen local partnerships with members of the public, private landowners, public land users and user groups, conservation organizations, and state and federal government agencies. Key Responsibilities Key responsibilities and day to day responsibilities of this position: Work closely with the public, DWR personnel, and federal, state, and local government partners to support wildlife-management goals and objectives consistent with applicable laws, rules, policies, and work plans. Assist DWR biologists and program staff with investigating and responding to wildlife depredation involving terrestrial wildlife species. Respond to nuisance wildlife situations, including the removal, transport, salvage, and disposal of wildlife carcasses. Assist with predator and other wildlife situations that may pose a risk to public safety, livestock, agricultural operations, or property. Capture, handle, transport, relocate, or euthanize wildlife as directed and in accordance with DWR policies and approved procedures. Communicate with members of the public regarding wildlife conflicts, available response options, and recommended prevention measures. Inspect and check in coyotes submitted through the coyote incentive program and complete associated records and documentation. Operate and maintain vehicles, trailers, field equipment, traps, firearms, and other equipment used during wildlife-response activities. Collect field information and maintain accurate records, reports, photographs, and other documentation related to nuisance, depredation, predator, and public-safety responses. Assist with other wildlife-management projects and duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum or "day-one" qualifications: Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with landowners, members of the public, coworkers, and partner agencies. Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during stressful, emotionally charged, or potentially hazardous wildlife situations. Ability to safely work around wildlife and follow established capture, handling, transport, and euthanasia procedures. Ability and willingness to use firearms and perform humane euthanasia of wildlife when required. Ability to operate motor vehicles and safely pull, back, and maneuver trailers. Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork, including hiking, climbing, crouching, and lifting, carrying, or dragging objects and wildlife weighing up to 100 pounds, sometimes over uneven terrain and in adverse weather conditions. Ability to complete accurate records, reports, and other written documentation. Basic computer skills, including using email, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and electronic recordkeeping systems and applications. Ability to understand and follow applicable laws, rules, policies, procedures, and supervisor instructions. Ability to work independently and as part of a team while managing changing priorities. Willingness and ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and irregular hours as needed. Valid driver's license. Hunter Education certification.

Preferred or trainable/on-the-job qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, natural resources, animal science, agriculture, or a closely related field; or equivalent directly related work experience. Experience assisting with wildlife capture, handling, restraint, transport, relocation, or euthanasia. Experience with chemical immobilization of wildlife. Knowledge of wildlife biology, behavior, ecology, and habitat relationships. Knowledge of common farming, ranching, livestock, and agricultural practices. Experience communicating with landowners, livestock producers, and members of the public regarding wildlife conflicts. Conflict resolution, de-escalation, and customer service experience. Experience operating trucks, trailers, ATVs, snowmobiles, forklifts, or other field equipment. Experience using firearms safely in field settings. Experience processing, salvaging, donating, or disposing of wildlife carcasses. First Aid, CPR, and Chemical Immobilization certification. About the Role Location

Employees may work in extreme heat or cold, rain, snow, wind, mud, dust, and other adverse weather or environmental conditions. The position requires work at night, on weekends, and on holidays, and outside normal business hours as needed to respond to wildlife-related situations. Employees will participate in an on-call rotation and must be available to respond to urgent wildlife-related situations outside normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work will involve exposure to live, injured, sick, or deceased wildlife; animal remains and bodily fluids; unpleasant odors; insects and parasites; agricultural chemicals; and other field hazards. Employees must be able to safely work around potentially dangerous wildlife and use appropriate personal protective equipment and established safety procedures. The work requires considerable physical exertion, including prolonged standing and walking, hiking over uneven or steep terrain, climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and maintaining balance. Employees must be able to independently lift and carry up to 50 pounds and lift, move, or drag objects or wildlife weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment. The position requires frequent entry into and exit from vehicles and may involve extended periods of driving throughout the assigned work area. Employees must be able to safely operate trucks, trailers, ATVs, snowmobiles, forklifts, and other vehicles or field equipment after receiving any required training. Work may require the use of traps, restraint equipment, firearms, chemical immobilization equipment, and other tools used to capture, handle, transport, relocate, or euthanize wildlife. Employees may occasionally work alone in remote areas with limited cellular service and must follow established communication and field-safety procedures.
