The Austin Aquarium is seeking a dedicated Aquarist to join our animal care team. This position involves daily husbandry of aquatic species, public engagement, and supporting our mission of conservation, education, and animal welfare.
Key Responsibilities:
Handle and present aquatic animals for guest encounters and educational events Prepare diets and feed a variety of aquatic species Clean and maintain aquatic enclosures and back-of-house holding areas Observe and monitor fish and aquatic animal health daily Maintain detailed animal care records and health logs Assist in the movement, capture, and safe restraint of animals as needed Support veterinary staff during medical exams and treatments Answer guest questions about animals and exhibits in a professional, educational manner Report births, deaths, behavioral changes, or injuries to management Assist with basic tank repairs, maintenance, and improvements under supervision Help train new keepers, interns, and volunteers Lead educational tours and participate in public speaking events Administer medications and monitor health conditions under supervision Perform duties assigned by management and the
Director of Husbandry Desired Skills & Experience:
Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience working with aquatic animals Excellent safety awareness and strong observational skills Knowledge in aquatic animal husbandry, enrichment, and water quality maintenance Comfortable handling a variety of species, including fish, invertebrates, and small aquatic reptiles Ability to recognize signs of illness and respond appropriately Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with guests and coworkers Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and performing active, physical tasks for extended periods (standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, etc.) Committed to learning and following husbandry protocols without deviation Positive, team-oriented attitude and willingness to work weekends and holidays as needed
