Seasonal Road Laborer (up to 180 days)

POSITION TITLE

Laborer (Under Collective Bargaining)

REPORTS TO

County Road Supervisor SUMMARY:

Performs routine and manual road maintenance work using hand tools and light equipment operation; and other related work. This is maintenance work of a routine and repetitive nature requiring no previous training with limited on-the-job training normally being adequate for successful work performance. Assignments normally involve the use of hand tools and operation of equipment which require limited skill or judgment in their use. More complicated equipment requiring a greater degree of skill may be operated during the annual maintenance cycle in a training capacity, under the guidance and direction of a more experienced employee or supervisor. Work is normally performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

SUPERVISION EXERCISEDAND RECEIVED

Supervision is not a normal responsibility of positions in this class. Work is generally performed under the immediate supervision of the Road Foreman or higher level road maintenance employee, although some assignments may be performed without continuing guidance.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

(including but not limited to) Operate a variety of light equipment such as pickup trucks, grass mowers, asphalt roller, power broom, grid roller, and similar equipment. Maintains roads and shoulders by cutting, cleaning, and burning brush; applying and compressing road patching materials; digs post holes and places traffic signs according to instruction; uses a variety of hand tools such as shovels, picks, post hole diggers, chain saws, axe, etc. Serve as flagman or pilot truck driver on patching, oiling, and striping crews. Perform minor preventative maintenance on assigned equipment. Perform related work as required.

ABILITY:

(including but not limited to) Ability to perform manual work for extended periods in all weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors. Ability to perform physically demanding manual labor. Ability to plan and set up traffic control signage (TCS) for all work zone areas. Sufficient manual dexterity to develop skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials employed in the work.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Any combination of experience, education and training which would demonstrate the level of knowledge and ability required.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a valid Driver's License.
