Job Description

Summary Requires knowledge and skills to perform troubleshooting, maintenance and repairs on automobiles, light, medium and heavy duty trucks, road construction and agricultural equipment; performs maintenance and repairs all county owned vehicles and equipment; uses county's fleet maintenance software and database to record repairs. The Senior Mechanic will possess and maintain a State of Texas vehicle inspector license while employed with Comal County. Essential Duties and Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Duties include the following:
Performs preventive maintenance checks, services and repair on cars, light trucks and medium to heavy duty trucks to include the areas of electrical, brakes, steering and suspension, heating and air conditioning, engine repair, engine performance, transmission and transaxle (on and off vehicle), manual drive trains and axles, and trailers; installs accessories, law enforcement equipment and radios in vehicles and equipment. Diagnoses, services and repairs hydraulic systems, pumps, cylinders, control valves, motors and related components. Performs State of Texas vehicle inspections and issues annual state safety inspection certificates. Road tests equipment; drives trucks or equipment as required; inspects vehicles in the shop and field. Reads and interprets printed and electronic manuals, drawings and specifications. Uses and maintains a full set of hand, power and shop tools. Uses test lights, multi-meters, precision measuring devices and hand held diagnostic equipment. Attendance is an essential function of the job.

EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; three (3) to five (5) years of vehicle maintenance experience or equivalent automotive/diesel vocational certification preferred, but not required. Must be able to read & understand Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used as part of job, as well as applicable safety rules & regulations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possess and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank vehicle and air brake endorsement; must provide a three (3) year driving history record in order to operate county vehicles. Possess and maintain a State of Texas vehicle inspector license or be able to pass the state exam within six (6) months of hire and maintain the vehicle inspector license through the course of employment with Comal County. Four (4) or more ASE certifications preferred, but not required.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must know and implement the Comal County Accident Prevention Plan. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective and cooperative working relationship with other employees. Must be able to operate in a strenuous environment both indoors and outdoors under all weather conditions. Desired Minimum Qualifications
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Able to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; present information in one-on-one and small group situations with other employees.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out uninvolved written or oral instructions.

Staffing needs and operational demands may necessitate variations in starting and ending times, as well as variations in the total hours that may be scheduled each day of the week, as deemed necessary by the County Engineer. The official workweek is a seven-day workweek beginning at 12:01 AM on Saturday and ending at 12:00 AM on the following Saturday. This position has been identified with possible risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and/or other various hazards that require immunization against such exposure. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
