POSITION OVERVIEW
The Severe Special Education Teacher's primary responsibility is to work in partnership with parents, students, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and general education teachers in accordance with the district's mission and vision, while maintaining compliance with Federal and State regulations, in order to promote student achievement, independence, and successful transition outcomes. Provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with moderate to severe disabilities and collaborates with school personnel to implement individualized programming aligned with students' academic, behavioral, vocational, communication, social/emotional, and independent living needs. Assists in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) and transition planning services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares for IEP team meetings and provides case management for assigned students with disabilities. Serves as a member of the IEP team as appropriate. Works cooperatively with school personnel to accomplish the goals and objectives of the School Department. Develops and implements IEPs with measurable goals and objectives. Makes data-driven instructional decisions to improve student outcomes. Interprets both informal and classroom-based assessments in order to make instructional decisions. Collects data on student performance to improve student outcomes and direct instruction. Administers and interprets formal assessments as appropriate, including transition and MCAS-Alt assessments. Selects and adapts materials to assist students with disabilities in accessing the general education curriculum and community-based learning opportunities. Collaborates with general education teachers to monitor student progress, inclusion opportunities, and compliance. Supervises, schedules, and trains special education aides and paraprofessionals working with assigned students. Plans evidence-based interventions appropriate for individual students and groups of students. Assists general education teachers with specifically designed instruction when necessary. Facilitates vocational training, community-based instruction, independent living skill development, and transition-focused programming. Facilitates student participation in extracurricular activities, Unified Sports, clubs, school events, and community-based experiences that promote inclusion, social development, independence, and meaningful engagement within the school community. Participates in professional development activities designed to advance teacher knowledge in the areas of instruction, transition planning, best practices, differentiated instruction, behavioral programming, and changes in educational policy. Demonstrates knowledge and implementation of statewide testing procedures, including MCAS-Alt portfolio assessment. Provides consultation to parents, teachers, therapists, specialists, paraprofessionals, and other appropriate school personnel. Completes all special education paperwork accurately, according to regulations and timelines. Adheres to established rules, regulations, laws, and appropriate ethical standards. Develops and monitors appropriate transition plans for students at transition age. Obtains and maintains compliant special education student files and documentation. Maintains professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, community partners, and adult service agencies. Collaborates with other special education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and school personnel to develop, implement, and maintain consistent programming and supports for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Provides leadership, supervision, scheduling, training, and ongoing support to paraprofessionals and special education aides working with assigned students to ensure effective implementation of instructional, behavioral, vocational, sensory, and transition programming. Assists students with activities of daily living and personal care needs as required, including toileting, diapering/changing, feeding, mobility assistance, transfers, positioning, and supporting students who utilize wheelchairs, adaptive equipment, or other specialized supports. Maintains active supervision and ensures student safety across school, community-based, and vocational settings, including supporting students with sensory, behavioral, or elopement needs who may require frequent movement, walking, redirection, or close physical monitoring throughout the school day. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.
QUALIFICATIONS-REQUIRED
Bachelor's Degree in and/or Master's Degree preferred. Massachusetts Educator's License in Severe Disabilities at the assigned level. Expertise with behavior management and crisis prevention strategies. Expertise with curriculum modification and differentiated instructional practices. Knowledge of transition planning, vocational programming, and community-based instruction. Knowledge of the requirements of state and federal special education regulations. Proficiency in educational diagnostic and prescriptive testing. Experience with MCAS-Alt portfolio assessment and transition assessment preferred. Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS-PREFERRED
A minimum of two years of successful experience as a special education teacher in a public school setting at the assigned level. Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities in transition-focused or substantially separate programming preferred. Experience supervising paraprofessionals and coordinating vocational/community-based experiences preferred.
TERMS:
This is a 10-month, 1.0 FTE position with a STA teacher's contract.
