90 Starting salary based on qualifications and experience. Job Description General Statement of Duties Performs responsible work providing a secure environment in the Detention Center. Job Responsibilities Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class is responsible for the safety and security of inmates in the Detention Center. Work generally requires the employee to book inmates; Assist Nurse while dispensing medication; issue meals; clothing; log in and secure money and personal property from relatives until inmate's release; transports inmates to medical appointments; court; and visitation; and mediate and resolve inmate conflicts. Guides may include North Carolina General Statutes; training manuals; and departmental standard operating policies and procedures. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Sheriff Detention Lieutenant and Sheriff Detention Sergeant. Illustrative Examples of Work
  • Maintains compliance with the jail's standard operating policies and procedures.
  • Books inmates (i.e. searches; fingerprints and photographs inmates; and documents and stores personal property); receives inmates from other correctional facilities; consults with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) to check for warrants.
  • Completes paperwork to ensure proper release of inmates.
  • Maintains security in the facility by scanning the facility regularly and conducting security checks; head counts and performing cell searches and inspections; monitors inmates.
  • Prepares reports on jail and inmate activities.
  • Escorts inmates to medical appointments; court proceedings and visitations while maintaining security for inmates and others.
  • Escorts nurses while dispensing medication.
  • Provides emergency medical care when needed.
  • Issues meals; clothing; linens (receives; counts and returns); toiletries and items from the canteen.
  • Answers telephones and assists callers or directs calls to the appropriate extension.
  • Assists with the cleaning and maintenance of the facility as needed; identifies maintenance issues.
  • Supervises inmates performing assignments such as cleaning and maintaining the facility and unloading shipments.
  • Greets visitors and families; records visits; inspects items brought into jail; and checks/distributes incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Mediates and resolves inmate conflicts; documents incidents.
  • Adheres to department's safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as required. Knowledge; Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of NC General Statutes as it pertains to detention facilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of the security; rules; regulations and procedures of the detention facility.
  • Thorough knowledge of the practices of modern penology as related to the supervision and care of persons under institutionalized restraint.
  • Ability to enforce facility rules firmly and fairly.
  • Ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates.
  • Ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately.
  • Ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility.
  • Ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates.
  • Ability to prepare records and reports.
  • Ability to operate computer.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers; inmates and their family members/visitors; law enforcement officials; judges; lawyers; ministers; probation officers; bondsmen; health care providers; and the general public. Education and Experience
  • Graduation from high school and some experience providing care and security for inmates or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must meet all minimum standards as set forth in North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards.
  • Field Training Officer Training (successfully complete field training hours for assigned division).
Licenses and Certifications Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver License.
