Job Description
Category Schools - Sign Language Interpreter Job Type Contract Empower young learners by supporting communication and inclusion in an engaging elementary school environment as a Sign Language Interpreter (SLI). In this contract position near Bolingbrook, IL, you'll serve students from early childhood through third grade, facilitating communication and fostering growth for a diverse group of kids. As part of a dedicated educational community, you will rotate between connected buildings, spending time in mainstream classrooms, in DHH (Deaf/Hard of Hearing) self-contained settings, and collaborating with related service providers. Your skills will help bridge communication for children with hearing needs and enhance their participation within their learning environment.
Qualifications & Desired Experience:
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and interpreting in academic settings Previous interpreting experience in schools, especially at the elementary level, is preferred Ability to adapt communication styles to individual student needs Knowledge of DHH classroom and mainstream settings Comfortable collaborating with teachers, other interpreters, and support staff Flexibility to work with both individuals and small groups throughout the school day Professional certification as a Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) is requiredKey Responsibilities:
Interpret classroom instruction, peer interactions, and school activities for students with hearing needs Support students in both general education and DHH self-contained classrooms Take part in related service provider sessions, ensuring access to all learning opportunities Assist with student transitions between classrooms within the connected campus buildings Foster a supportive, inclusive atmosphere for all students Bring your passion and proficiency to a school that values communication access for every child.
