Job Title:
Slitter Machine Operator - 2nd Shift Job Description This role operates and assists with precision steel coil slitting equipment in a heavy industrial steel processing center. You will set up and run slitter machines, handle steel coils and sheets, perform accurate measurements, and ensure material quality and proper documentation while working on 2nd shift. Responsibilities Operate and assist with slitter machines to process steel coils to precise widths within tight tolerances. Feed strips of steel into the re-coiler and ensure proper tracking of steel during processing. Set up slitter heads, including changing out and adjusting tooling to meet job specifications. Crop off tail ends of heavy gauge finished products safely and efficiently. Use tape measures, calipers, and micrometers to verify material dimensions and tolerances. Observe and inspect steel coils and sheets for defects and report or correct issues as needed. Log all processed coils accurately in the coil log and maintain required production records. Band and package finished steel products using banding equipment and packing lines. Operate overhead cranes and forklifts to move large rolls of steel and finished coils safely. Lift and handle sheets of steel weighing up to 100+ pounds while following safe lifting practices. Support production goals by performing general labor tasks in the steel processing area as required. Work collaboratively with team members to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Follow all safety procedures related to heavy industrial equipment, overhead cranes, and steel processing. Essential Skills At least 2 years of experience assisting with or operating a slitter machine in a production environment. Hands-on experience with steel coils and steel processing operations. Ability to set up and change out slitter heads to meet job requirements. Proficiency in reading and using a tape measure, caliper, and micrometer for precise measurements. Banding experience with finished steel products. Experience working in a heavy industrial environment with large steel coils and machinery. Overhead crane experience for moving steel coils and materials. Forklift experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting. Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot basic equipment issues. Ability to lift sheets of steel weighing up to 100+ pounds safely. Sheet metal or coil handling experience. Ability to work 2nd shift from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Additional Skills & Qualifications Cut-to-length experience in a steel or metals processing environment. Experience with related machinery such as grinders, band saws, blanking equipment, and other production machines. General labor experience in a fast-paced production setting. Strong attention to detail when inspecting material for defects and verifying measurements. Comfort working around large rolls of steel, slitters, and banding machines. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based in a steel processing center that handles large rolls of steel using overhead cranes, slitters, forklifts, and banding machines. The facility operates heavy industrial equipment, including precision slitter lines with full-loop capabilities, drag pad and roll tension stands, packing lines, grinders, band saws, blanking, and cut-to-length machinery. You will work on 2nd shift from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. in a production environment that can be noisy and requires strict adherence to safety procedures. Steel toe footwear is required, and you will regularly work around moving machinery, overhead loads, and heavy steel coils in a team-oriented setting of about 33 employees. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sauk Village, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $26.72 - $28.22/hr.
