Job Description

The SNAP Navigator is a key part of our outreach and client-support strategy, ensuring that eligible residents can access and maintain their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The SNAP Navigator provides direct assistance, education, and outreach to New Jersey residents seeking SNAP benefits. This role helps clients complete applications, understand eligibility, gather documentation, and navigate follow-up steps. The Navigator represents the organization in the community and works closely with staff and partners to advance our mission of improving food access for all. Conduct outreach in the community to raise awareness about SNAP benefits and eligibility. Provide one-on-one assistance to clients with SNAP applications, renewals, and case follow-up. Screen individuals and families for SNAP eligibility using NJ state guidelines. Help clients gather required documentation and troubleshoot application issues. Maintain strong relationships with food pantries, shelters, schools, churches, and community partners. Attend outreach events, mobile food distributions, and community fairs as a representative of the organization. Maintain confidential client records and accurately track all outreach, applications, and follow-up activities. Enter required data into internal systems, state tools, and reporting forms. Provide education on benefit usage, reporting requirements, and how to maintain SNAP benefits. Uphold nonprofit values of dignity, respect, cultural sensitivity, and equity in all client interactions. High school diploma. Experience working with diverse and underserved communities. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Comfort speaking with clients in person, by phone, and in community settings. Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office) Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA-aligned privacy practices. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for community outreach. Experience in nonprofits, social services, food access programs, or case management. Bilingual (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, or other languages common in NJ). Familiarity with public benefits, including SNAP, Medicaid, and TANF. Experience doing outreach or community engagement. Compassionate, client-centered approach. Organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple cases at once. Strong problem-solving skills when navigating state systems. Comfortable working independently and within a team. Culturally sensitive and able to build trust within diverse communities. Community-based work at partner sites such as food pantries, schools, and libraries Evening or weekend outreach events Office, hybrid, and field-based work environments Health, dental, and vision insurance Paid holidays and PTO Mileage reimbursement Training and certification provided 401(k) or nonprofit retirement plan
Pay:
Up to $22.00 per hour
