Jailer / Control Room Operator Job Description Position Title Jailer / Control Room Operator Department Sheriff's Office / Detention Center Reports To Sheriff, Jail Administrator, or Assigned Supervisor Position Summary The Jailer / Control Room Operator is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the detention facility and Sheriff's Office through monitoring surveillance systems, electronic security controls, inmate activity, and public access to the facility. This position serves as a communication and security hub by operating control room equipment, answering telephones, greeting visitors, and monitoring electronic doors and security systems. The employee must obtain and maintain Georgia POST certification as a Jailer. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Monitor surveillance cameras and security systems throughout the detention facility and Sheriff's Office. Operate and monitor electronic door control systems to ensure facility security. Answer incoming telephone calls and direct calls appropriately. Greet and assist visitors entering the Sheriff's Office building in a professional manner. Observe inmate activity and report unusual behavior, emergencies, or security concerns to supervisors. Maintain security logs, incident reports, and other required documentation. Monitor alarms, intercom systems, radios, and other communication equipment. Control access to secure areas of the facility. Communicate effectively with deputies, jail staff, emergency personnel, and the public. Respond appropriately during emergencies following Sheriff's Office policies and procedures. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and law enforcement records. Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must possess a valid driver's license. Ability to pass background investigation, drug screening, and any other required pre-employment testing. Must obtain and maintain Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification as a Jailer within the required timeframe. Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
