Summary The Town of Shrewsbury is seeking an exceptional public sector leader to join its executive leadership team as the first Deputy Town Manager. This is a unique opportunity to help lead one of Massachusetts' premier communities, a AAA-rated municipality of nearly 40,000 residents recognized for innovation, fiscal responsibility, outstanding public services, and organizational excellence. As a strategic advisor to the Town Manager, the Deputy Town Manager will lead the Town's Community Development and Human Services portfolio, advancing initiatives in housing, planning, economic development, and community well-being. The position oversees departments that enhance residents' quality of life, including recreation, library, public health, veterans services, senior services, and other community programs, while managing complex budgets, leading cross-departmental initiatives, developing strategic policies, and building partnerships with residents, businesses, developers, nonprofit organizations, and regional and state agencies. The Deputy Town Manager also serves as Acting Town Manager when designated. The Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will be a collaborative, visionary leader with a Master's degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, Urban Planning, Community Development, or a related field and at least ten (10) years of progressively responsible executive leadership experience in municipal or public sector management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This individual will bring extensive knowledge of municipal government operations, public finance, land use planning, housing, economic development, human services administration, and Massachusetts local government. They will be a strategic thinker who is equally committed to exceptional customer service, capable of navigating complex policy issues, building consensus among diverse stakeholders, and leading organizational change. The ideal candidate inspires high-performing teams through mentorship, accountability, and innovation while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to transparency, integrity, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Work Hours & Benefits The Deputy Town Manager works from a private office within the Town Manager's Office Suite at Town Hall and serves as a key member of the Town's executive leadership team, collaborating closely with the Town Manager, Assistant Town Managers, department heads, elected officials, community partners, and residents.
