The Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources includes the departments of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Agricultural Education and Communications, Animal and Food Sciences, Landscape Architecture, Plant and Soil Science, and Veterinary Sciences, along with multiple research centers and institutes. The College houses eight major research centers and institutes: the Center for Agriscience Communications, Davis College Water Center, Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute, Institute for Genomics of Crop Abiotic Stress Tolerance, International Center for Agricultural Competitiveness, International Center for Food Industry Excellence, Texas Cooperative Research Unit, and the Thornton Agricultural Finance Institute. The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics currently has 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, two professors of practice, one adjunct faculty member, 525 undergraduate students, and 106 graduate students. The Department offers B.S. degrees in Agribusiness and Agricultural and Applied Economics, as well as a concentration in International Agribusiness with programs in Latin America, Asia, and Europe; M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Agricultural and Applied Economics, and a Master of Agribusiness. Position Description:
The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Livestock Economics with 60% research, 30% teaching, and 10% service and community outreach/engagement. The position will begin January 1, 2027.
Major/Essential Functions:
In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a dynamic student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service. Cattle and dairy production are among the leading agricultural sectors in West Texas. The faculty member hired in this position is expected to work with Texas cattle, beef, and dairy producers, as well as swine and pork producers. Opportunities exist for the faculty member in this position to collaborate on research with Texas Tech's Free Market Institute (www.fmi.ttu.edu) to enable the development of a new program on free enterprise and livestock, and the School of Veterinary Medicine. The faculty hired in this position is expected to develop strong stakeholder engagement and outreach programs with cattle and dairy producers, agribusiness firms, industry organizations, and policymakers across West Texas. The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized research, teaching, and graduate mentoring program in livestock economics, covering production, marketing, and policy aspects of the livestock sector. On the production side, the research program would include, but not be limited to, economic decisions related to feed and water availability; cow/calf, stocker, feedlot operations; dynamic cattle cycle; beef supply; milk production; and profitability of cattle ranchers, dairy farmers, and swine producers. On the marketing side, the research area would cover, but not be limited to, economic analysis related to domestic marketing and international trade of cattle, beef, pork, and milk products; risk management and contracts; and market concentration and performance. On the policy components, the research program would examine farm, trade, and animal health policies. We seek applicants with theoretical, empirical, and analytical skills to conduct research related to these areas. As a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, you will be expected to maintain a strong publication record in high-quality agricultural economics and economics journals and contribute to the national and international visibility of the department, teach undergraduate and graduate classes, mentor graduate students, secure external funding, and serve the department-, college-, and university-level and professional association committees.
Required Qualifications:
1. A Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Economics, or a similar field.
2. Demonstrated excellence in oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills as evidenced by articles submitted or published in professional economics or agricultural economics journals.
3. Knowledge of the US livestock production, marketing, and policies, as evidenced by dissertation chapters, working papers, or recent peer-reviewed articles published in a top agricultural economics journal.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Excellent training in theoretical and empirical aspects related to livestock economics, microeconomic theory, dynamic optimization, production economics, domestic and international marketing, and farm and trade policies related to the livestock sector. 2. A proven capacity or a record indicative of scholarships and publications in reputable journals related to feed markets, drought resilience, water use, production, marketing, policy analysis, and resource management in livestock systems. 3. Research related to international livestock product trade, global market competitiveness, and trade-policy analysis. 4. Experience using advanced quantitative methods, artificial intelligence, machine learning, big-data analytics, or computational methods applied to livestock production, marketing, risk management, or policy analysis. 5. A successful grantsmanship or a record indicative of securing extramural federal funding. 6. Demonstrated ability or a record indicative of teaching excellence at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. 7. Research addressing livestock supply-chain resilience, animal disease economics, biosecurity, and global market disruptions.
