Job Description

Position Overview:
The Leadership Intern assigned to the Office of Councilwoman Irene Sanchez will gain hands-on exposure to tribal governance, public service, and the day-to-day responsibilities of an elected Tribal Council member. The internship is designed as a mentorship-centered learning experience that allows the intern to observe and support Tribal Council activities while developing a broader understanding of how Tribal Council, tribal departments, and community programs work together to serve Pascua Yaqui communities. The intern will work with Councilwoman Sanchez and designated staff on administrative, governance, community, and special projects based on current office priorities and the intern's academic background and professional interests. The placement will emphasize professionalism, confidentiality, relationship-building, and meaningful exposure to tribal government.

Approximately 10-12 hours per week, with flexibility based on academic schedules and office needs
Work Environment:
Primarily office and government settings, with potential opportunities to attend meetings, tribal departments, programs, and community activities
Supervision/Mentorship:
Councilwoman Sanchez and/or designated staff
Compensation:
Program stipend in accordance with Leadership Internship Program guidelines
Pay:
$3,000 semester stipend Primary Responsibilities The intern may assist with responsibilities including: Supporting preparation and organization of materials for Tribal Council meetings, committee meetings, and other official activities. Assisting with meeting agendas, documents, correspondence, and general office organization. Organizing, reviewing, and archiving historical agendas, records, and other office materials. Supporting records management and identifying opportunities to improve the organization and accessibility of office documents. Providing general administrative and project support based on the priorities of Councilwoman Sanchez's office. Conducting basic research or gathering information related to issues, programs, or initiatives relevant to the Tribal Council. Attending Tribal Council, committee, departmental, or community meetings when appropriate. Accompany Councilwoman Sanchez or designated staff during visits to tribal departments, programs, or community activities when appropriate. Assisting with special projects related to Tribal Council priorities and community needs. Completing other internship-related assignments that support the intern's understanding of tribal governance and public service. Governance & Oversight Exposure When appropriate, the intern may have opportunities to observe or support work connected to Councilwoman Sanchez's oversight responsibilities and areas of interest, including: Senior Services Health Education Public Safety Other emerging Tribal Council or community priorities Through these experiences, the intern will gain exposure to how Tribal Council members communicate with departments, review community needs, participate in oversight activities, and contribute to tribal policy and decision-making. Learning Objectives By the conclusion of the internship, the intern should be able to: Demonstrate a stronger understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Tribal Council. Describe how Tribal Council interacts with tribal departments, programs, and community members. Understand the importance of confidentiality, professionalism, and accountability in tribal government. Demonstrate improved organizational, communication, and administrative skills. Identify how oversight committees contribute to tribal governance and departmental accountability. Develop greater confidence within tribal government and professional settings. Connect academic interests and career goals to opportunities within tribal government and public service. This placement may be a strong fit for students or recent graduates with academic backgrounds or interests in areas such as: Public Administration Political Science Government or Public Policy Education Public Health or Health Sciences Social Work or Behavioral Health Criminal Justice or Public Safety Indigenous Studies History Communications Business Administration Other related fields Students from other academic disciplines are also encouraged to apply. Consideration may be given to the student's interests, experience, career goals, and potential alignment with Councilwoman Sanchez's oversight responsibilities and current office priorities.
