Job Description

Department Development Services-Planning Location Default Salary $56,977.00 - $69,421.00 a year Open Date 06/02/2026 Close Date 08/31/2026 Description Job Description Assists the City Planner in all development review functions and code administration in accordance with the Huntsville Development Code and Comprehensive Plan. Answers questions of the general public developers and contractors with regards to the development process. Performs field and office work related to planning and development programs for the utilization of land and physical facilities of the City. Job Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification; only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional; position-specific duties. Processes applications for zoning; subdivision; development; annexations; variance requests and other planning related processes. Compiles staff reports; public hearing notifications and other required documents in conjunction with the requests. Coordinates the review of development proposals; plats and site plans for conformance with codes; plans; and local and state regulations. Provides information to the public regarding development regulations. Conducts field evaluations and assessments. Prepares and maintains minutes; agendas and reports for the Planning & Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Adjustments. Performs all other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning; Geography; Public Administration or similar studies; required. Knowledge of basic municipal planning and zoning policies and techniques; required. Skill in developing related reports and ability to analyze and present data on land use applications and planning. Working knowledge of ArcGIS and Microsoft suite; required. Minimum 2 years planning experience preferred.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
A valid Texas Driver's License and acceptable driving record. Skills & Abilities Ability to cooperate with staff; elected officials and the public. Ability to operate office machines; such as computers; printers; calculators; fax machines; etc. Ability to maintain a professional manner when dealing with internal and external customers. Ability to read; comprehend and retain City and State policies and legislation; i.e. City ordinances; procedure manuals; Code of Ordinance and Office Procedures. Ability to meet deadlines both internally and externally. Must be extremely detail oriented. Experience with customer service etiquette and practices. Ability to organize; prioritize and carry out office work with minimal supervision. Reasoning Abilities Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations. Ability to think quickly; use tact and diplomacy in dealing with stressful situations. Ability to plan work and establish priorities. Ability to use good judgement and effectively problem-solve. Language Abilities Ability to clearly communicate with others in a professional manner in both verbal and written form. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate basic mathematical calculations (addition; subtraction; multiplication; division) without the aid of a calculator. Physical Demands /
