Job Description

BUILDING INSPECTIONS
- The purpose of this position is to ensure compliance and enforcement of the town's zoning regulations and standards; educate residents and businesses regarding zoning regulations; and foster positive community relationships. Employees in this position achieve compliance through on-site investigations and written and oral communication, with the ability to explain land use concepts in English and Spanish. This position occasionally requires early morning, nighttime and weekend inspections, and attendance at appropriate meetings. Some telework is allowable, contingent upon supervisor's approval.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Investigates complaints, inquiries and questions, and performs inspections and re-inspections of private and commercial establishments; provides English/Spanish translation as needed, including transcripts of conversations. Conducts field patrol on a daily basis. 2. Drafts or revise informational and educational materials in English and Spanish; provide educational outreach to town homeowners' associations, residents and businesses. Provides front counter, phone and email assistance as needed. 3. Creates and maintains files, keeping confidentiality as needed; enter case information into the town's CityWorks database, updating as needed. Write letters and violation notices; provide case status reports. 4. Works with Community Development planning staff to ensure adherence to Architectural Review Board, Heritage Preservation Review Board, Board of Zoning Appeals, and the town's governing body. 5. Performs site inspections to verify zoning compliance with approved site plans. 6. Performs basic zoning compliance review for residential development plans. 7. Testifies in court regarding town enforcement matters. 8. Notifies violators of the town's sign ordinance and removes illegally placed signs in the rights-of-way as needed. 9. Delivers community development meeting packets as needed. 10. Performs other duties as required.
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED, with a minimum of two years' experience in enforcement/planning or zoning, to include reading and applying zoning ordinance language required Bachelor's degree in planning or related field preferred Oral and written Spanish preferred; or the ability to attend classes or training to learn Proficiency in oral and written English Ability to obtain Virginia Zoning Official certification within three years of employment Familiarity with CityWorks or similar permitting/violation tracking system Valid driver's license with acceptable record Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance The Town of Herndon, VA is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
