Job Description

Overview The Academic Counselor assumes all responsibilities for academic counseling in assigned secondary school(s). Utilizing advocacy, and collaboration, the school counselor promotes student success, provides preventive services, and responds to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic needs for all students. The major functions of counseling position will include: training advisors in the delivery of guidance curriculum, developing individual student plans and providing school wide system support. The school academic counseling program will be based on responding to student needs and analysis of student data. Responsibilities 1. Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program to include services offered by the Social and Emotional Counselor and the Director of College Admissions. 2. Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal goals and plans. 3. Accurately and appropriately prepares and interprets student data. 4. Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with their academic pathway. 5. Implements an effective referral, tracking and follow-up process that incorporates all school counseling services. 6. Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services. 7. Develops and maintains a calendar of activities that include school wide counseling services. 8. Provides appropriate information and training to staff related to the comprehensive school counseling program. 9. Assists teachers, parents/guardians and other stake holders in interpreting and understanding student data. 10. Assists students and parents in determining the academic program that best suits the student's continued success in meeting graduation requirements. 11. Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program. 12. Adheres to laws, Aspire policies, procedures and ethical standards of the school counseling profession. 13. Conducts a yearly program audit to review the extent of the counseling program implementation 14. Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis. 15. Measures results of the school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate. 16. Monitors student academic performance, behavior and attendance and assists the school administration with appropriate interventions. Qualifications 1) Required knowledge, skills & abilities:
  • Knowledge of current state and federal laws governing counseling and adherence to these laws.
  • Maintains professional confidentiality and works collaboratively with the Director of College Admissions, Counselor for Social and Emotional Counseling and the school administration.
  • Works with all constituents in a pleasant and cooperative manner
  • Assists in the implementation all Aspire academic policies at the school site level
  • Demonstrates a willingness and skill in presenting policies to small and large groups 2) Experience required:
  • Previous teaching experience preferred
  • Knowledgeable of college admissions requirements 3)
Physical Requirements:
  • Stand, walk and bend over, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, and pull. Move, lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds to shoulder height.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
  • Repetitive use of hands (i.e., fine manipulation, simple grasping, and power grasping).
  • Demonstrate normal depth perception.
  • Sitting, walking or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, operate standard office equipment, and use a telephone
  • See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids.
  • Distinguish colors.
  • Read and understand rules and policies, labels, and instructions.
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone.
  • Verbal communications, including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels and on the telephone.

Work Environment:
  • Work indoors in a standard office environment, computer lab, and/or classroom environment.
  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor4 environments.
  • Exposure to dust, oils, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Some exposure to childhood and other diseases in a school environment.
  • May be required to work outside of normal workdays and office hours to meet operational deadlines.

Special Requirements:
  • Maintain a valid California driver's license.
  • Maintain an Aspire-insurable driving record.
Requirements:
  • 3 to 5 years delivering a school counseling program
  • Valid CA Pupil Personnel Services Credential required
  • Bachelor's Degree; Masters in Counseling preferred
