An Academic or Guidance Counselor provides guidance to students in elementary, middle and high schools to help them succeed academically and socially. Works with school teachers and administrators to address problems that affect student performance, and identifies resources for students and families. Helps high school students to plan academic course work and advises on the college search and application process.
The Counseling Assistant supports students' behavioral, social-emotional, and academic success by providing direct student support under the guidance of the school Counselor and Principal. This is an entry-level student support position designed for individuals interested in school counseling, social work, psychology, education, or related fields. The Counseling Assistant helps deliver classroom social-emotional learning lessons, supports students experiencing behavioral or emotional challenges, assists with student regulation and re-entry, and provides additional support to students with significant needs. The role works closely with counselors, teachers, administrators, and families to help students remain safely and successfully engaged in school.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Student Support & Intervention Provide direct support to students experiencing behavioral, emotional, or social-emotional challenges. Respond to students who leave the classroom or need additional support with regulation and re-entry. Support students with recurring or higher-level needs throughout the school day. Provide check-ins, structured breaks, and other assigned interventions for identified students. Assist with restorative conversations, conflict resolution, and student re-entry following incidents. Help students develop coping, regulation, problem-solving, and positive decision-making skills. Counseling & SEL Support Assist the Counselor with classroom SEL lessons, student groups, and schoolwide wellness activities. Reinforce counseling strategies and student goals established by the Counselor or student support team. Support individual students and small groups under the direction of credentialed staff. Prepare materials and resources for counseling lessons, groups, and student interventions. Help implement trauma-informed, restorative, and positive behavior support practices. Classroom & Campus Support Provide support for students with significant behavioral or social-emotional needs. Support students during transitions, recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, assemblies, and other high-need times. Assist teachers and staff when students need brief regulation or behavioral support outside the classroom. Help students return to instruction as quickly and successfully as appropriate. Maintain a visible and supportive presence throughout the campus. Student Support Systems Participate in SST, MTSS, 504, IEP, behavior, and other student support meetings as requested. Collect and document student intervention, behavior, or support data as assigned. Communicate student concerns and patterns to the Counselor and school administration. Assist with implementation of behavior plans and student support plans developed by school staff. Maintain accurate and confidential student documentation. Family & Professional Responsibilities Build positive relationships with students, families, and staff. Support family communication regarding student interventions when directed by the Counselor or administrator. Collaborate with counselors, teachers, administrators, and other student support staff. Maintain confidentiality regarding student and family information. Participate in professional development and schoolwide activities as assigned. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Associate's degree required; bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, education, or related field preferred. Experience working with school-aged children or youth preferred. Candidates pursuing a PPS credential or related graduate program are encouraged to apply. Strong relationship-building, communication, and de-escalation skills. Ability to remain calm and supportive with students experiencing behavioral or emotional challenges. Bilingual Spanish preferred. Commitment to Scholarship Prep's mission and values.
