General Description of the Position The College Success Coach for Academic Recovery supports undergraduate students who are on academic probation or at risk of dismissal by providing individualized coaching, structured success planning, and ongoing accountability. This position is 100% Grant Funded. Working within a centralized advising and student success structure at a Historically Black University, the Success Coach uses intrusive, equity-minded approaches to promote academic skill development, self-efficacy, and connection to campus resources, with special focus on Black and other historically underserved students. Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Maintain a targeted caseload of students on academic probation or at risk, providing regularly scheduled one-on-one coaching focused on goal setting, time management, study strategies, and academic recovery planning.
Develop individualized Academic Success Plans in collaboration with students, professional advisors, and where appropriate faculty, outlining clear expectations, milestones, and use of tutoring, workshops, and other supports.
Monitor academic progress throughout the term using centralized advising/early alert systems, proactively reaching out to students who miss classes, assignments, or coaching sessions and adjusting success plans as needed.
Coordinate and facilitate small-group workshops and success series on topics such as learning strategies, test preparation, motivation, resilience, growth mindset, and navigating academic policies and appeals.
Partner closely with the centralized advising team to align coaching with advising campaigns (e.g., midterm outreach, registration, SAP interventions) and to ensure consistent messaging about expectations and resources.
Refer students to appropriate campus resources (tutoring, writing center, counseling services, financial aid, disability services, identity centers) and follow up to ensure successful connection and continued engagement.
Use a culturally responsive, strengths-based approach that honors HBCU history and student identities, integrating culturally relevant examples, affirmation, and community-building into coaching interactions.
Track student contacts, interventions, and outcomes in designated systems, maintaining accurate, timely records consistent with FERPA and institutional policies.
Analyze caseload data (e.g., GPA changes, course completion, term-to-term persistence) to evaluate the effectiveness of coaching strategies and inform continuous improvement of academic recovery programming.
Participate in committees, trainings, and campus initiatives related to academic standing, retention, and student success, representing the needs and experiences of probation and at-risk students Knowledge, skills, and abilities
Knowledge of student development and retention theories, particularly related to academic difficulty, motivation, and persistence among Black and first-generation college students.
Strong coaching and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build trust, hold students accountable with care, and engage in difficult conversations about performance and behavior.
Ability to collaborate effectively with professional advisors, faculty, and campus partners in a centralized structure, and to navigate complex academic policies and procedures.
Excellent organizational skills, including caseload management, documentation, and the ability to balance individual coaching, workshops, and administrative tasks.
Proficiency with student information systems, early alert/CRM tools, and standard office software; ability to use data to guide outreach, prioritize caseloads, and demonstrate impact.
Reports to the Assistant Vice President of Student Success.
Requires some evening and weekend hours to accommodate workshops, events, and student availability, particularly during peak academic risk periods (e.g., midterms, finals)
This is position is 100% grant funded. Qualification Standards Minimum qualifications Bachelor's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, psychology, education, or a related field.
Two or more years of experience working directly with college students in academic advising, student success, TRIO/educational opportunity programs, residence life, or related areas, with evidence of supporting students facing academic difficulty.
Demonstrated commitment to the mission of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and to promoting equity, inclusion, and success for Black students and other historically marginalized populations.
Preferred qualifications Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related discipline.
Experience in a centralized advising or student success model, including use of early alert, case management, or CRM systems for monitoring student progress.
Formal training or certification in academic coaching, success coaching, or related coaching models.
Experience working with students on academic probation, suspension/appeal processes, or Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) interventions.
