Job Description of School Counselor Position Title:
School Counselor (Grades 6-12)
Reports To:
Principal Primary Role:
Provides social, emotional, and behavioral support to students in grades 6-12 to promote academic success and overall well-being, in collaboration with the school counseling program and school staff.
Position Summary:
The School Counselor serves students in grades 6-12 by providing services that reduce barriers to learning and support student success. This role collaborates with school counselors, administration, teachers, and families to deliver prevention, intervention, and resource-based supports aligned with students' social-emotional and behavioral needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide individual and small group support for students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges Collaborate with the school counselor and student support team to implement and monitor intervention plans Support crisis intervention and follow-up for students in need Partner with teachers and staff to support student engagement, behavior, and classroom success Communicate with families to provide support, resources, and referrals as needed Connect students and families with community agencies and services to address identified needs Support attendance improvement efforts, including interventions for at-risk students Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings (MTSS, case conferences, etc.) Contribute to the development and implementation of school-wide initiatives that promote positive behavior and mental wellness Maintain accurate and confidential documentation in compliance with school, state, and professional standards
Qualifications:
Experience working with adolescents in a school or related setting is preferred Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
Preferred Skills:
Knowledge of trauma-informed practices Ability to build positive relationships with students and families Familiarity with community resources and support systems Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
Working Conditions:
This position works primarily in a school setting and may involve occasional evening meetings or coordination with outside agencies.
Pay:
$30,000.00 - $40,000.00 per year
