Job Description

OVERVIEW
River of Life is an urban Christian school, which opened in Benton Harbor, Michigan in 2014. Modeling a new educational paradigm for families/children through the love and hope from knowing Jesus is its mission. "A Christian school any family can afford" is the motto. We are a K-9 elementary, middle, and high school with approximately 70 students in attendance. The Guidance Counselor provides counseling services to students to support their academic, social, emotional, and personal development. This role works collaboratively with teachers, parents, and administrative staff to foster a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment. The Guidance Counselor assists students in overcoming barriers to learning, promotes student well-being, and helps develop strategies that support academic success and healthy interpersonal relationships.
JOB DETAILS
Provide individual and group counseling services to students to address academic, personal, social, and emotional concerns. Assist students in developing effective problem-solving, decision-making, and coping skills. Collaborate with teachers and administrative staff to identify and address academic challenges affecting student performance. Conduct academic assessments and assist students in setting and achieving educational goals. Support students in developing positive relationships with peers, teachers, and other adults, fostering a respectful and inclusive school environment. Respond to and manage student crises or emergency situations. Work collaboratively with school administration, families, and external service providers to ensure timely intervention, support, and resolution. Partner with administrative and instructional staff to develop and implement strategic intervention plans that promote student success and positive educational outcomes. Conduct classroom guidance lessons and workshops on topics such as bullying prevention, peer pressure, conflict resolution, social-emotional learning, and character development. Work closely with parents and guardians to address concerns related to students' academic performance, social development, and emotional well-being. Provide guidance and instruction regarding academic planning, career exploration, and post-secondary readiness. Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with school policies and applicable laws and regulations. Participate in student support meetings, parent conferences, and professional development as required. Perform other duties as assigned to meet student needs and support the school's educational mission and goals. The ideal Guidance Counselor for this role possesses a strong commitment to serving God and demonstrates Christ-centered character in all interactions. This individual models Biblical principles and supports the school's Christian mission. The Guidance Counselor position reports directly to the school Principal and Assistant Principal. CREDENTIALS
Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field required, with a minimum of two (2) years of guidance counseling or student support experience. Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field preferred, with a minimum of two (2) years of counseling experience. Demonstrated knowledge of student academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development. Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively work with students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment in accordance with ethical and legal standards. Experience in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and student advocacy preferred. Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.
DRESS CODE
Professional Attire Only- Uniform Wear or Better. Gym shoes in good repair may be worn.
