Position Summary:

The High School Counselor provides a comprehensive program that supports scholars' academic achievement, social-emotional development, graduation planning, and college and career readiness. The counselor works closely with scholars, families, educators, school leaders, and external partners to remove barriers to success and ensure that every scholar has an individualized pathway to graduation and postsecondary success. The counselor maintains accurate academic records, monitors progress toward graduation, coordinates course planning and scheduling, supports testing and college admissions processes, and provides responsive individual and group counseling. This role also collaborates with special education staff and participates in required student-support meetings.

Essential Responsibilities:

Implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with scholar needs and schoolwide priorities Provide individual and small-group counseling related to academic progress, social-emotional needs, attendance, behavior, school adjustment, and postsecondary planning Monitor each scholar's progress toward graduation, including credits, Regents requirements, course completion, and other diploma requirements Develop and maintain individualized graduation and postsecondary plans for scholars Counsel scholars and families regarding course selection, scheduling, registration, study habits, credit recovery, career exploration, and graduation pathways Create, review, and update scholar schedules in collaboration with school leadership Create, audit, and maintain accurate transcripts and academic records Use attendance, academic, behavioral, and assessment data to identify scholars in need of intervention and coordinate timely supports Communicate regularly with scholars and families regarding academic standing, graduation progress, testing, college and career planning, and available supports Educate scholars and families about colleges, admissions requirements, financial aid, scholarships, application procedures, and postsecondary options Coordinate college visits, college representative meetings, career exploration opportunities, and other postsecondary readiness events Support seniors with college applications, personal statements, recommendation requests, financial aid completion, scholarship applications, and enrollment decisions Write official school recommendations for assigned seniors and ensure required application materials are submitted accurately and on time Maintain and share current information about colleges, career pathways, scholarships, financial aid, and the cost of postsecondary education Maintain and disseminate information about standardized and college-readiness assessments, including the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and applicable New York State assessments Assist with assessment registration, administration, proctoring plans, accommodations, and scholar preparation as assigned Coordinate with sending and receiving schools and internal staff to ensure accurate and timely transfer of scholar records Build and maintain partnerships with colleges, universities, community organizations, and career-based programs Collaborate with educators, administrators, the school social worker, intervention staff, and families to address barriers to scholar success Participate in child-study, attendance, MTSS, crisis-response, and other student-support meetings as assigned Collaborate with the Special Education team to ensure scholars with disabilities receive appropriate academic, scheduling, transition, and postsecondary planning support Attend required CSE meetings, annual reviews, and other special education meetings, and contribute relevant academic and transition-planning information Maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA, mandated-reporting requirements, school policies, and applicable laws and regulations Maintain accurate, organized, and up-to-date counseling records, reports, and documentation Model professionalism, cultural responsiveness, ethical behavior, and a strong commitment to the mission and pillars of ALCS Participate in professional development, schoolwide initiatives, family events, and additional responsibilities as assigned Maintain regular and punctual attendance

Qualifications:

Required:

Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Education, or a closely related field required New York State School Counselor certification required, or eligibility to obtain certification Knowledge of New York State graduation requirements, diploma pathways, student records, and college admissions processes Training in trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and data-informed counseling practices preferred

Preferred:

Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Education, or a closely related field required New York State School Counselor certification required, or eligibility to obtain certification Knowledge of New York State graduation requirements, diploma pathways, student records, and college admissions processes Training in trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and data-informed counseling practices preferred
