Founded in 1971 in LongIsland City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardiaoffers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023,LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia's degree-seeking students are born outside the UnitedStates; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over theage of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges,typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, andVeterinary Technology enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility - moving low-incomestudents into the middle class and beyond - in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020). Please visit www.laguardia.edu to learn more. The Senior AcademicAdvisor reports to the Associate Director for Student Advising Services.The Senior Academic Advisor will:
Provideindividualized, developmentally appropriate academic advising to new, continuing, and returning students. Assist students inselecting appropriate courses each term based on degree requirements, career goals, transfer plans, placement scores, and academicstanding. Collaborate with faculty and academic departments to ensure accurate interpretation of college policies, degree pathways,prerequisites, and course sequencing. Support students in developing long-term academic plans that align with their educational,career, and transfer goals. Leverage academic advising tools and technologies such as Navigate, DegreeWorks, and CUNYfirst tometiculously review and maintain accurate tracking of student progress and data. Monitor student academic progress, identifypotential barriers to success, and initiate proactive outreach when students are off-track. Track progress of students on probationand implement strategies to improve retention and academic performance. Assist students in continually monitoring and evaluatingtheir education progress by reviewing academic audits, providing support services referrals and information on college policies Develop, present and assess professional development and training workshops for students, faculty, and staff. May be calledupon to serve on campus committees as appropriate and manage part-time and support staff in the absence of the Director or AssociateDirector of Advising. Evening and occasional weekends required.QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in appropriate discipline (e.g., highereducation, counseling, guidance, social work, or psychology) preferred Experience working with first-generation, low-income, and/orhistorically underserved student populations. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within thedepartment and with faculty and administrators Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office 365 andaptitude to learn new systems as needed, such as DegreeWorks, Navigate and PeopleSoft.CUNYTITLE OVERVIEW

Offerscomprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment andstudent affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses Monitors students' performances and takesappropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements Develops academic plans and performsgraduation audits Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures andguidelines Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling Establishes andmaintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses May supervise extramural activities, such as internshipsand community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed May provide career and transfer services and/or specializedprogram counseling May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff Performs related duties as assigned.Job Title Name:
