JOB PURPOSE
The GO Club Counselor provides direct supervision and engagement for children in grades K-6 in a safe, structured, and positive afterschool environment. This role supports social, emotional, and academic development through planned activities and meaningful relationships. Counselors represent the YMCA's mission and values while working collaboratively with staff, schools, families, and community partners.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
(not a complete list): Provide consistent supervision and ensure the daily safety and well-being of all participants Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality for all scheduled shifts and communicate absences promptly Implement curriculum and planned activities according to program schedules Foster positive relationships with children through engagement, guidance, and mentorship Communicate effectively with families, school staff, and YMCA leadership regarding participant experiences Collaborate with team members, volunteers, and school personnel to create a positive program environment Model inclusive practices that ensure all participants feel safe, respected, and welcome Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and positive behavior at all times Maintain current knowledge of YMCA policies, procedures, and youth development standards Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse. Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff. Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements. Abide by the YMCA's four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect & Responsibility. Required:
Must be at least 18 years of age High school diploma or GED Minimum of six months working or volunteering with children Demonstrated positive role-model behavior and professionalism Strong interest in working with children on a daily basis Current CPR, First Aid, and Oxygen Certification (will provide upon hire) Ability to communicate clearly with children, parents, school staff, and coworkers Reliable attendance and punctuality
Preferred:
Bilingual (English/Spanish) Strong verbal communication skills Associate's degree, teacher certification, or higher in education or a related field
