Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate certificate with a school counselor endorsement.
JOB TITLE

SECONDARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR JOB SUMMARY
Plan, organize and deliver a comprehensive school guidance and counseling program that personalizes education and supports, promotes, and enhances the academic, personal, social and career development of all students.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Coordinates parent conferences, communicates with parents regarding academic and social concerns; communicates with staff to provide academic, social and emotional interventions. Oversees scheduling of students, assists with new student registration, and induction of new students to the school. Leads 504 team meetings, participates in child study team meetings, works cooperatively with special education teams, and assists with evaluation and placement meetings. Coordinates building wide or grade level assessments for the state or district including training staff, accounting for and securing testing materials, disseminating data, and contributing to the school improvement plan Educates parent, students and staff on various topics including bullying and harassment Participates with other staff to cooperatively develop effective, positive techniques for improving student behavior. Provides positive assistance and guidance to a diverse student population Consults with parents, staff, students, and outside agency personnel regarding mental health, behavioral, social/emotional, developmental appropriateness, educational concerns and means of intervention for student benefit. Participates in team and individual instructional planning Facilitates and participates in staff meetings, planning events Provides crisis intervention assistance; makes CPS referrals; trains staff on crisis intervention. Works cooperatively with total building staff in an atmosphere of cooperation and collegiality. Implement and comply with District policies and the Code of Professional Conduct. Maintain consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours specified under contract. Fulfill other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: Knowledge of applicable federal and state rules and regulations Understanding of school wide academic offerings, scheduling of students Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to each pupil, taking into consideration individual background and characteristics Ability to effectively address a wide range of academic , social and developmental needs including at-risk, cultural diversity, physical disabilities, English language learners, and special education students Ability to operate a computer and learn the operation of specific software programs. Ability to assess and evaluate student progress and achievement Ability to utilize assessment data to make recommendations for school improvement planning Ability to promote and encourage learning and promote safe learning environments for all Skill in organization and time management Ability to collaborate with administration, parents, students, staff, and outside agencies Ability to maintain accurate records Ability to work independently and take initiative Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written formats with a variety of constituents Ability to work cooperatively with other professionals in a team setting Ability to maintain confidentiality Ability to strengthen job-related competencies and participate in professional development activities
EDUCATION
Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate certificate in school counseling Valid Washington State driver's license required
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Successful and recent experience as a counselor in a school setting Student cultural and economic diversity experience
