Starting Salary:

$40,248.00/Annual ($19.35/Hr.)

Position Summary & Responsibilities Position Summary:

This position served as Job Specialist at Winfield Correctional Facility. Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: This position serves as the Employment Specialist at Winfield Correctional Facility. Supports higher education programming at WCF as directed by the Case Management and Reentry Administrator, in close collaboration with the KDOC Education Director. This includes working closely with college partner liaisons; assisting in notifying residents of higher education opportunities and working with liaisons and designated reentry staff to screen applications and help form classes; assist the college liaisons and Education Director in identifying barriers and solving them; coordinating higher education programming completers with available services related to achieving livable wage employment after release; coordinating higher education programming with employers who hire persons with those relevant certifications/degrees; and assisting in increasing capacity for delivering higher education programming, including support services for the incarcerated students, throughout the facility. Coordinate with Workforce and College navigator to insure that a residents needs are being met.

Pre-Release Employment Plans:

Work with offenders (coordinating with unit team and reentry staff as needed) at designated site to prepare employment plans, including helping offenders with mock interviews, resume, applications, soft-skills building, addressing cognitive distortions/thinking errors impacting success in employment (including through EPICS, MI, OERS, etc.), connecting to a mentor, preparing a portfolio reflecting work done inside (coordinating with providers, including GED, vocational training, job readiness and other programs) and detail supervisors (including obtaining information about performance consistent with

), access to job searches, access to pre-release job interviews, access to workforce centers, forums for employers to interview offenders, and other strategies that ensure offenders leverage what work they have done before and during incarceration to be employable; and that they are transitioned to services in the community to assist them in achieving sustained employment. Using all these strategies, work with offenders to develop simple straight forward job plans, either doing the work directly, or monitoring unit team, volunteers, mentors, or inmate tutors in doing so, to ensure that offenders have portfolios of accomplishments in hand, and that they have a plan for job searching, problem solving, transportation, identification, and other issues that impact their employability. Also co-facilitates Job Readiness CBT groups as caseload allows and as directed by supervisor.

Resource Room/Transition/Community Contacts:

Establish/staff/office in facility resource room(s), as the locus point for employment services in the facility, educating unit team, providers, volunteers, mentors, mentoring coordinators, and others as appropriate about the presence, role and services provided through the resource room. Develop relationships with facility stakeholders to ensure offenders are referred to the resource room, and that they are served with the appropriate dose according to risk/need. Develop and sustain relationships with parole, workforce centers, employers, mentoring coordinators, and other services and supports, to transition offenders upon release to community support to achieve sustained employment. Serve as a liaison between work done in the facility and community stakeholders, especially workforce centers and employers, to provide information about individual offender achievements/skills/preparation and department policies and practices, in support of offenders readying themselves for sustained employment.

Development of Job Opportunities:

In coordination with local workforce centers, make contact with employers to develop job opportunities for offenders. This includes setting up pre-release mock interviews that includes real employers as interviewers; setting up job fairs inside; making contact with employers in the community to determine their receptiveness to hiring offenders; coordinating between employers and designated parole offices to address barriers to employers hiring offenders; and other strategies that increase opportunities for offenders to achieve sustained employment.

Data:

Collect data as requested by supervisor and Reentry division; make program tracking entries if/as appropriate; otherwise track information about work for use in determining services delivered, processes and impact. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications :

Six months of experience in planning, implementing and monitoring activities relevant to the agency's programs. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications :

Bachelor's degree with major coursework in criminal justice, the social sciences, or the behavioral sciences, and three years of experience working with offenders in corrections. Or 60 semester hours of college credit, with twelve hours in corrections or a related field, and five years of experience working with offenders in corrections. Two years experience in the workforce industry, helping individuals high risk regarding employment to achieve sustained employment, and/or working with the job placement arm of a college. Two years experience working with multi-discipline groups. Two years experience in offender CBT group work. Effective in working with a team and communicating.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements :

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and the ability to travel throughout the state as needed. Must successfully pass a criminal history records check. Must successfully pass a pre-employment urinalysis (UA) drug screening.
