Academic Advisors are full-time professionals who use a developmental advising approach grounded in student growth, engagement, and successful progression from onboarding through program completion. Advisors manage a caseload of students and provide comprehensive support across the student lifecycle, including onboarding, academic planning, career exploration, and ongoing progress monitoring. Through intentional engagement and proactive outreach, Advisors build meaningful relationships with students, identify barriers to success, and connect students to appropriate academic and non-academic resources that support persistence and completion. Advisors actively monitor and respond to student alerts (automated and faculty/staff-generated) to provide timely outreach, targeted interventions, and individualized support that promotes student success. This role integrates career exploration into advising practice, helping students align their academic pathways with their strengths, interests, and long-term goals. Advisors collaborate closely with faculty, staff, and campus partners to ensure coordinated, equitable, and student-centered support, with a strong commitment to serving diverse student populations. Work schedules may require day, evening, and weekend/extended work hours, as well as travel between College locations as needed. Responsibilities may also include occasional in-state and out-of-state travel in support of College programs and initiatives. Example of Duties Essential Duties and Responsibilities are modeled on NACADA Academic Advising Core Competencies (concepts that academic advisors must understand, knowledge academic advisors must master, and relational skills academic advisors must demonstrate):
  • Provide holistic, student-centered advising that supports university transfer, business, and arts and sciences students from onboarding through completion, emphasizing learning, growth, persistence, and goal attainment.
  • Guide new students through admissions, onboarding, and initial enrollment processes, helping them establish a strong foundation for success and a sense of belonging at the College.
  • Deliver individualized advising through multiple modalities (in-person, virtual, and digital communication) to support students in exploring strengths and interests, clarifying academic and career goals, developing comprehensive academic plans, registering for courses, and navigating challenges.
  • Guide students in identifying appropriate educational pathways across curriculum and continuing education aligned with their goals.
  • Support students in identifying baccalaureate majors, four-year institutions, and transfer pathways that align with their academic, career, and personal goals.
  • Assist students in understanding and applying NCCCS and ACC articulation agreements to develop clear and efficient transfer plans.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of ACC university transfer programs to support students in selecting appropriate pathways and course sequences that facilitate successful transfer as juniors into their intended majors.
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Career and Talent Development and campus partners to integrate career exploration and readiness into advising conversations, supporting alignment between academic plans and long-term goals.
  • Support students in developing decision-making, problem-solving, self-advocacy, and goal-setting skills that foster independence and ownership of their educational journey. Proactive Support & Student Success Interventions
  • Engage in proactive outreach to an assigned caseload of students, providing timely and intentional communication based on academic milestones, progress, and identified needs.
  • Monitor and respond to student alerts (automated and faculty/staff-generated) by initiating outreach, assessing student needs, and coordinating appropriate interventions and follow-up support.
  • Connect students to academic and non-academic resources on campus and in the community to address barriers to success (e.g., tutoring, advising support, basic needs, wellness, career services), and follow up to ensure engagement and impact.
  • Conduct targeted outreach to students to confirm and process withdrawal and program change requests, ensuring accuracy and timely updates to student records. Caseload Management & Operations
  • Maintain an organized caseload management approach by tracking student progress, documenting interactions within a reasonable timeframe as defined by the Senior Advisor, and using data to inform outreach strategies and improve student success outcomes.
  • Apply institutional, state, and federal policies and procedures in ways that are clear, supportive, and student-centered. Collaboration & Institutional Engagement
  • Build and sustain collaborative relationships with advisors, faculty, and staff to ensure coordinated, consistent, and student-centered support.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, orientation, and student engagement initiatives, including programming that enhances connection, persistence, and success.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by engaging in professional development and participating in assessment, planning, and evaluation efforts.
  • Plan and facilitate group advising sessions, student workshops, and professional development presentations to support student success and institutional initiatives. Advising Support & Training
  • Provide training and support to advisors and Student Services staff assisting with advising and registration to ensure consistent and effective student support. T ransfer Advising & Pathway Navigation
  • Support students in identifying baccalaureate majors and four-year institutions that align with their goals, resources, and life circumstances.
  • Assist students in connecting with four-year institution transfer representatives and navigating transfer applications, deadlines, and requirements.
  • Support students in developing clear transfer pathways that ensure efficient progress toward their intended major and institution. General Expectations

  • Experience working in a community college and an understanding of the challenges faced by community college students, including first-generation students, adult learners, and diverse student populations.
