The Learning to Work Program , administered at Emma Lazarus High School in collaboration with the New York City Public Schools, assists under-credited students in acquiring the skills, knowledge, and habits of mind that will maximize their potential. The program aims to enable students to graduate high school and transition into post-secondary education or enter meaningful permanent employment. The school is located at 100 Hester Street, New York, NY 10002.Title:
Senior Advocate Counselor -College and Career Specialist FLSA Status:
Full-Time Non-Exempt Reports to:Program Director Basic Function:
Provide academic, college, and career counseling. Perform counseling duties consistent with the needs of program participants. Assists with the delivery of educational services through Advisory and Seminar sessions.Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist students with completing CUNY, SUNY, and private college applications.
- Assist students in filing financial aid forms and scholarship applications (FAFSA, TAP, DREAM Act, Excelsior Scholarship, CSS Profile, Posse, QuestBridge, and etc.).
- Assist students with registering for the SAT.
- Assist students with completing College Now applications and track students' progress.
- Establish a rapport with program participants. Assist them in identifying their educational, college, and career goals; help them to formulate written plans through post-secondary planning.
- Establish a rapport with family members and assist in parent-teacher conferences.
- Maintain a caseload of participants. Complete the individual services strategy with participants.
- Provide crisis intervention services.
- Prepare, execute, and facilitate workshops related to college, financial aid, and career planning.
- Arrange and execute college visits and inform students about college and career opportunities.
- Advocate for in-school remediation for participants as appropriate. Prepare paperwork, such as intake forms, evaluations, reports, and etc., as needed.
- Provide individual and group counseling.
- Monitor the academic progress and attendance of participants on assigned caseload.
- Advocate for participants needing social services and care.
- Provide interpersonal and life management skills counseling.
- Participate on interdisciplinary participant progress teams within the school.
- Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, and staff to provide support to students when needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum BA degree
- Bilingual preferred (Bengali, Cantonese, French, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Russian)
- At least 2 years of experience working and providing counseling services to children and adolescents
- Knowledge of adolescent development and youth development principles
- Knowledge of college, financial aid, scholarship, and SAT application and registration process
- Knowledge of performance-based contracting
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for work, professionalism, responsibility, and organizational skills
- Values providing outstanding service and working in a team environment with school personnel
Salary and Benefits:
Salary range: $56,100 - $59,100 based on experience, qualifications and fit.
