JOB DESCRIPTION
Position:
Direct Care Counselor Reports to:
Program Director General Statement of Duties:
The Direct Care Counselor is responsible for the daily ongoing supervision and monitoring of guests in the Emergency Shelter and program participants in the Transition Program, ensuring that all agency and program policies are followed.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Assists new shelter guests in completing registration forms, explains all rules and shelter policies. 2. Maintains appropriate structure and limit setting at all times in order to promote a safe and secure living environment. 3. Ensures that all shelter guests are onsite and signed-in by 8 pm each evening. 4. Completes bed log each evening. 5. Completes shift communication log, noting all significant incidents that occur, including specific guest behaviors which may be of concern. 6. Ensures that each assigned guest has completed their daily chore. 7. Supervises meal preparation. 8. Makes regular rounds of the building and grounds to ensure safety. 9. Reports particular guest concerns to Case Manager for further follow-up. 10. Provides immediate crisis counseling, if necessary. Assisting the guest in calling the local mental health crisis linc, if needed. 11. Attends and participates in various planning meetings with agency staff. 12. Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required. Education/experience in human service related areas. Experience with low-income and minority populations. Experience in the areas of homelessness, mental health and substance abuse services preferred.' '
