Domestic Violence Shelter Advocate

  • Full-time Help, Incorporated is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and self-motivated Full-Time Shelter Advocate to support individuals and families residing in our emergency shelter.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring safety, stability, and support for clients experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of interpersonal violence.
Position Overview:
The Shelter Advocate serves as a primary point of contact during overnight hours, providing crisis response, emotional support, and practical assistance to clients. This role requires strong decision-making skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a calm and supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct client intakes, orientations, and ongoing support services Respond to client needs with empathy, professionalism, and trauma-informed care Assist clients with safety planning and connection to community resources Maintain accurate and timely documentation and reports Support shelter operations, including organization, cleanliness, and inventory of donations Lift, sort, and organize donated items as needed Provide occasional transportation for clients when appropriate Monitor the safety and security of the shelter environment Collaborate with staff and community partners to ensure coordinated care
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required Bachelor's degree in a human services field is preferred but not required ; relevant experience and a willingness to learn will be strongly considered Experience working with individuals impacted by violence, trauma, or crisis situations is highly beneficial Valid North Carolina driver's license required
Preferred Skills and Attributes:
Strong communication skills (written and verbal) Excellent organizational and time-management abilities Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain accurate documentation Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions in high-stress situations Self-starter with the ability to work independently and stay motivated during overnight shifts Physically able to lift and move donations and assist with shelter tasks Understanding of trauma-informed care and commitment to client-centered services Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries Comfortable working with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a non-judgmental and inclusive manner Team-oriented with a positive and professional approach
Work Environment & Expectations:
This position requires emotional resilience and the ability to support individuals in crisis who may be experiencing trauma, fear, or distress. Candidates must understand the unique challenges and risks associated with serving victims of violence and demonstrate the ability to respond with professionalism, empathy, and sound judgment.
Schedule & Training:
Initial training: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM
  • 5:00 PM Regular schedule: Monday-Friday, 11:30 PM
  • 8:00 AM (overnight shift)
Additional Information:
Upon hire, the Advocate will complete required training, which may include
OVC TTAC
Victim Assistance Training, NC SAVAN Training, and NC Victim Compensation Services training.
