Job Description

Shelter House is a non-profit agency serving domestic violence survivors in Okaloosa and Walton counties. The supportive, non-judgmental environment at Shelter House works to make every survivor feel safe, empowered and confident. Our diverse team is made up of individuals that are professional, self-motivated, adaptable to change in a stressful environment, flexible with their schedules and can remain calm in crisis situations. They are also able to provide a supportive environment for survivors and their peers by maintaining a positive attitude and being mission-focused. This is the perfect role for someone that truly wants to be a part of positive social change, and make an impact in the lives of the women, children and men served at Shelter House. Experience working with marginalized populations is preferred, but not required. The Victim Advocate is responsible for responding to crisis calls on the hotline and providing support, advocacy, and case management services to women, children and men in the confidential shelter; this position reports to the Associate Director. Duties may include, but are not limited to: Responsible for providing services to victims of domestic violence using the empowerment model. Assess hotline/ crisis calls. Offer a safety plan to all participants. Screen, admit and orient new residents to emergency shelter. Provide referrals to outside agencies to ensure that participants receive comprehensive services from the community. Advocate for participants' needs and victim's rights in all settings as requested or necessary. Coordinate participant needs with other staff as necessary. Accountable for documenting information as required per agency policy. Responsible for participating in and completing all required opportunities for continuing education. Other duties as assigned.
