Job Description

The Outreach Specialist supports the implementation of Alianza Translatinx's Corazones Valientes Community Violence Intervention (CVI) Program, a peer-led initiative designed to reduce gun violence victimization among Transgender, Gender Nonconforming, and Intersex (TGI) residents in Santa Ana. This role focuses on community outreach, relationship-building, and participant engagement with individuals at elevated risk of gun violence. Through street outreach, trust-building, and resource distribution, the Outreach Specialist serves as a credible messenger connecting community members to stabilizing resources and supportive services. The Outreach Specialist works closely with the Navigation Specialist and Program Director to ensure participants are connected to services that increase safety, healing, and long-term stability. This position includes a 90-day introductory probationary period.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Attendance & Professional Standards:
Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality. Work a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week. Be available to work flexible hours, including scheduled evening outreach shifts (9:00 PM-1:00 AM) and occasional weekends. Community Outreach & Engagement Conduct peer-led outreach in high-impact areas, including encampments, motels, shelters, hospitals, and areas where survival economies are present. Build trust-based relationships with community members at elevated risk of gun violence victimization. Distribute essential resources such as hygiene kits, clothing, communication devices, safety kits, and other support items. Share information about violence prevention, available services, and safety resources during outreach activities. Identify individuals who may benefit from program services and support warm handoffs to the Navigation Specialist. Support participant recruitment for workshops, healing circles, and other program activities.
Participant Engagement & Retention:
Conduct follow-up outreach and check-ins with program participants to maintain engagement. Support appointment reminders and help participants stay connected to services. Assist participants in overcoming barriers that may prevent access to services or program participation. Support outreach re-engagement with participants who may disengage or experience instability.
Rapid Community Response & Stabilization Support :
Assist program staff in rapid response efforts following incidents of community violence or hate-motivated harm. Support outreach efforts in hospitals, shelters, encampments, or other community locations following incidents of violence. Assist with distribution of emergency resources including clothing, communication tools, hygiene items, and other stabilization supplies.
Workshop & Leadership Development Support:
Assist with logistics and participant outreach for the Empowerment Workshop Series. Support healing circles and peer-led community gatherings. Help identify participants who may benefit from deeper engagement or peer leadership opportunities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS
This position is hybrid, combining office-based coordination and field-based outreach. Typical Time Split (may vary): Approximately 40% field outreach Approximately 60% office coordination and participant engagement Field environments may include settings with trauma exposure, substance use, unpredictable behavior, and emotionally intense situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Experience in community outreach, peer support, or direct service preferred. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to build trust with individuals facing complex life circumstances. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. Comfortable using computers, tablets, and Microsoft Office. Commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive practices.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Lived experience within TGI communities strongly preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred. Experience working with unhoused individuals, immigrants, or survivors of violence. Familiarity with Apricot 360 or similar systems. We value lived experience and community trust as highly as formal credentials.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to remain calm in high-pressure environments. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Strong boundary-setting and confidentiality practices.
TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS
Must have reliable transportation and valid California Driver's License. If using a personal vehicle for outreach, proof of valid driver's license and automobile insurance is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing this job, the employee may: Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods. Frequently drive. Lift and carry materials up to 20 lbs. Participate in active field-based outreach.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
This role requires the ability to: Manage shifting priorities and multiple responsibilities. Respond to crisis situations. Work in environments involving trauma exposure. Maintain professional boundaries and emotional regulation.
