Job Description

Coordinator of Religious Education
  • St. Ignatius
  • Chapel Point Maryland St.
Ignatius Church at Chapel Point is seeking a Coordinator of Religious Education.

St. Ignatius Chapel Point is a historic parish, founded in 1662 and staffed by the Jesuits since then without interruption. We are located in rural southern Maryland, only 35 miles south of Washington DC. We are a small, though growing, community of fewer than 350 registered families, but we are friends in the Lord, generously caring for one another. Our way of thinking about and listening to God is informed by the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Despite our origins in the distant past, we are a modern parish, gladly following the vision set for us by the Church of Vatican II.The Coordinator of Religious Education will share responsibility with parish leadership for proclaiming the Gospel and helping parishioners to encounter the living Jesus. The Coordinator will know that he/she has succeeded in his/her work if those who participate in our program of religious instruction experience being loved by God.

Specifically, the Coordinator of Religious Education is responsible for:
  • developing and presenting Christ-centered, Scripture-based religious instruction to the children of the parish (70+
  • children/year);
  • preparing the children and youth for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist (20+
  • children/year), and Confirmation (20+
  • youth/year);
  • developing and presenting an OCIA program to persons (3-5 persons/year) desiring to be baptized that will not only introduce them to the person of Jesus as he has been revealed in the Scriptures and the Catholic tradition, but will also help them be incorporated into the Church, which is his Body;
  • developing and leading a modest program of adult education;
  • assisting the pastor in preparing couples for marriage (6+
  • couples/year) and for the baptism of their children (15+
  • children/year);
  • developing and leading a 5-day Summer Vacation Bible School program for parish children;
  • keeping the parish Sacramental Records, and preparing certificates and other records showing reception of Sacraments;
  • recruiting, training, and supervising catechists to assist with the religious instruction of children and youth;
  • preparing and administering an annual budget for the parish Religious Education program
  • regular conversations with the pastor and other parish staff to assure that the parish Religious Education program is well-integrated with and supportive of other parish activities.
A qualified applicant will be a baptized and confirmed, practicing Roman Catholic with a Bachelor's Degree in Theology or related field. The applicant should have some experience working with children and youth, yet should be at ease working with adults. The applicant should be able to work without close supervision, but should be aware of and responsive to the needs of the persons he/she will be serving.

The Coordinator of Religious Education answers directly to the pastor, but must be able to take initiative and work without close supervision.

The position is part-time (15-20 hours/week). The Coordinator will be expected to work these hours on the parish campus. The wage is negotiable.

Interested persons should send their resume to: pastorchapelpoint.org.
