POSITION CLASSIFICATION
:
Full-time Employee, Exempt PURPOSE:
At Newport, the one thing we want to be good at more than anything else is making apprentices, or disciples, of Jesus. We are seeking a Youth Ministry (YM) Director who desires to lead an age-appropriate ministry where youth in grades 6-12 are learning to think, act, and relate like Jesus. Thus, YM at Newport has a mission, and YM has a place as a community-within-the-community, fitting collaboratively within the church's evolving apprentice-making system. The YM Director will provide a trustworthy presence to help youth navigate doubts, fears, and growth opportunities through that turbulent season of life. The Director will foster an environment where students experience healthy relationships, and seek outsiders and "lost sheep" as our first ministry.
YOUTH MINISTRY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Youth ministry culture Apprenticeship to
Jesus:
Create an inviting, dynamic environment for youth to become, and grow as, apprentices of Jesus in the presence of the Spirit.
Relational:
Build a culture where youth - active, fringe, and visitors - enjoy healthy relationships with other youth and connections across generations, in an increasingly multicultural church.
Prefer the outsider:
Actively strive to bring new youth into apprenticeship to Jesus. Build and maintain a culture where youth feel comfortable inviting their friends. Relationships with students and parents Cultivate meaningful, supportive relationships with active, fringe, and visiting students. Be present at student events during the school year and invite volunteer leaders along. Foster relationships with parents that are mindful of appropriate levels of confidentiality. Volunteers and intergenerational relationships Connect students with Newport adults in mutually encouraging, intergenerational relationships. Create a system for meeting regularly with each YM volunteer. Comply and enforce all Newport YM risk management factors. Leadership of Youth Ministry Maintain and communicate a vision for youth ministry that aligns with Newport's overall vision. Create YM key documents (vision statement, student roster, events calendar, volunteer roster, etc.) and revise them with key adult volunteers on a yearly basis. Create, submit, and adhere to a youth department budget. Communication On a weekly basis, communicate clearly to youth and parents through a variety of platforms. Keep Newport pastors, staff, leaders, and congregants updated about what is happening in YM. Curriculum Stay abreast of curriculum and related materials so YM volunteers are well resourced. Develop and/or use a curriculum plan that lasts 1-3 years. Design and build a confirmation or apprenticeship program for students. Events and meetings Arrange YM events that may include Bible studies, community service, camps, retreats, etc. Create and update internal records for all significant programming. Your own wellbeing and development You reproduce who you are. Therefore, participate in all appropriate Newport practices designed for your wellbeing and development. These include taking days off, actively tending your own relationship with God, pursuing healthy key relationships, and so on. Meet regularly with the Lead Pastor for spiritual mentoring, leadership training, and other education opportunities to further your personal and professional development.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Note:
Based on the number of students currently in our YM, we envision you spending 3/4 of your time directly on YM. Focusing on one or both of the following two areas, the other 1/4 of your time can be customized to your gifts and talents, and what you aspire to do. Pastoral Pick up administrative pastoral support responsibilities as needed. This could include preaching, teaching, officiating Communion and baptisms, organizing Newcomers classes, and so on. Communications Coordinate external and internal communications for Newport. This could include redesigning the NCC website, managing our social media presence, refining NCC's internal communications, etc.
