HOUSE OF RUTH CHILDREN'S ADVOCATE DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the Children's Program Director, the Children's Advocate is responsible for the implementation of program material and activities, including supervision of the children while they are in the program.
SALARY Range:
Grade 5, $20-21 hourly
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains a supportive and caring environment for children and facilitates the smooth operation of the Children's Program.
  • Monitors, supports, and encourages general adherence to Shelter and Children's program policies.
  • Responsible for implementation of daily planned program and supervision of children during program hours.
  • Assists children in developing and using non-violent problem-solving skills.
  • Responsible for consultation with Children's Program Director, Shelter Manager and Shelter Director and other relevant staff regarding case management issues like child abuse reporting, behavior management issues, and client histories.
  • Maintains accurate records, such as records of daily events with the program as well as maintaining written accounts of children's attendance, progress notes, and permission slips.
  • Provides appropriate role model for and promotes appropriate social interaction among the children in the program.
  • Assists with supervision and transportation of children and families on planned off-site outings.
  • Attend all mandatory and appropriate meetings, including training.
  • Communicate professionally and appropriately with staff and the public by observing confidentiality, staying focused on job tasks, and demonstrating active listening skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to be an effective team member by communicating openly, cooperating with other staff, demonstrating positive attitudes, and working together to solve problems.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively under supervision by being open to feedback, reporting on and following through on suggestions.
  • Responsible for maintaining a healthy, clean, and safe workspace.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of education in behavioral or social sciences, or one year of related experience with children in a social service setting. Awareness of women and children's issues and the dynamics of domestic violence. Ability to relate in a non-judgmental manner to women and children in crisis. Awareness of principles of crisis intervention, and child development. Bilingual Spanish preferred. California Driver's License, reliable transportation, proof of insurance and a good driving record required.
