Until Filled Farmington Public Schools has an opening for a full time School Social Worker at Farmington Valley Transition Academy located in Avon starting August 26, 2026 for the 26-27 School year.
General Description:
School Social Workers are mental health professionals who provide support to students experiencing behavioral, social, or emotional challenges that are impeding academic progress. They also work directly with families to strengthen the home-school partnership and to connect families with community resources and providers who can supplement school services. School Social Workers maintain a focus on grade level academic performance and the development of the skills and dispositions of the FPS Vision of the Global Citizen for students on their caseload. They communicate regularly with classroom teachers, sharing effective strategies for supporting student growth. Working as vital members of a learning organization, school social workers develop positive relationships with colleagues, families, and students and work collaboratively to ensure that all children achieve academic and personal growth. They contribute to systems in the school that provide crisis management, mental health interventions, and support services. School Social workers maintain high levels of confidentiality and demonstrate all aspects of CT's Code of Professional Responsibility.
Qualifications:
Must hold or be eligible for CT State Certification in Social Work 071 Consideration will be given to the following – Relevant and recent experience References that indicate excellent academic and behavioral support skills, initiative, and a learner mindset Philosophy that aligns with the district's core beliefs Various life experiences that enhance contributions to the overall district and/or school community
Salary:
$56,018 - $114,029 based upon education and experience (per FEA contract)

Evaluation:
School Social Workers report the are evaluated by the Director of Special Services with support from the FVTA Program Director. Essential Domains of School Social Worker Practice
PLANNING
Maintain accurate and timely caseload records and documentation Develop clear goals, learning targets, and intervention plans for individual students, ensuring high expectations for all Design counseling lessons that support transfer and application of skills to new situations Make learning meaningful and relevant to students COUNSELING and
SUPPORT SERVICES
Establish and maintain a therapeutic learning environment with high levels of active engagement and a sense of community, inclusive of all learners Develop student independence and resilience through reflection, feedback, goal setting and trust Use knowledge of community resources and referral pathways to develop a comprehensive system of care for students and their families
ASSESSMENT
Collect, analyze and use assessment data to plan responsive instruction or support Design opportunities for students to understand and monitor their own progress Contribute to Planning and Placement Team meetings as needed Provide students with timely and specific feedback that fosters a growth mindset Work with colleagues to calibrate expectations
COLLABORATION
Develop supportive relationships with students, families and colleagues Communicate with families to ensure a positive home-school partnership and an understanding of their child's needs and programming Respond to immediate crisis situations acting as a member of the team Exhibit cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse cultures, values and beliefs Collaborate with classroom teachers and staff to develop consistency and transfer of student learning including behavior management plans Provide training and support for classroom teachers in the areas of social and emotional learning
PROFESSIONALISM
Demonstrate a learner orientation – participate in professional development opportunities, take initiative to improve professional practice, learn from feedback, contribute to the learning of other teachers Demonstrate professional responsibility – good attendance, timely work completion, organized and confidential record keeping, and ethical behavior
