A Family, School, or General Social Worker provides specialized assistance to vulnerable families and children. Intervenes in crisis situations; evaluates individual and family needs, helps clients get access to health care, mental health care or social services such as housing assistance. Advocates for clients and provides follow up visits. May work with teachers, parents and school administrators to help students improve academically and deal with social issues such as bullying.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The District Social Workers will support Birmingham Public Schools' continued development of a comprehensive and inclusive system of student support that integrates mental health, social-emotional wellness, and behavioral health within the district's MTSS framework. The position is intended to increase students' access to prevention, early intervention, and responsive social, emotional, behavioral and mental health services and to strengthen coordination among students, families, schools, and community providers. Because this is a district-level position, the social worker may serve students in multiple schools and at multiple grade levels. The social worker supports the behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs of all students across inclusive educational settings. Assignments will be determined based on student needs, district priorities, data, and areas of greatest need and may change over time. Grant Requirements This position is supported through Michigan Section 31aa(5) funding for student mental health support staff. Consistent with grant requirements, individuals hired into this position must: Hold all licenses, certifications, and/or approvals required for the services provided and not practice outside the scope of their professional credentials. Agree to participate in and comply with any comprehensive evaluation or program evaluation requirements associated with Section 31aa(5) funding. Complete all required district, state, grant, service-tracking, and outcome documentation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Social Work Valid Michigan social work license and appropriate credentials/approval to provide school-based social work services Must provide services within the scope of professional licensure and credentials Experience supporting the social-emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs of children and adolescents preferred Experience with school-based mental health, behavioral intervention, crisis response, and/or Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) preferred Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with students, families, teachers, administrators, student support personnel, and community providers Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with families and professionals Strong organizational, documentation, and technology skills Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to respond effectively to emotionally charged and crisis situations Commitment to supporting the needs of all students and teachers within an inclusive, student-centered system of support
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Serve as a district-level social worker, with assignments based on student and district needs rather than assignment to one specific school or program. Provide direct mental health and social-emotional support to students through individual, small-group, classroom, and other appropriate service models. Provide consultation, coaching, professional learning and job-embedded support to staff by modeling, teaching, and reinforcing evidence-based strategies to address students' behavioral, social-emotional, mental health, executive functioning and self-regulation needs. Support students experiencing social-emotional, behavioral, mental health, attendance, family, or other barriers that impact their ability to access and engage successfully in school. Provide prevention, early intervention, and responsive mental health services across Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 within the district's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Provide crisis intervention and support for students experiencing acute social-emotional, behavioral, or mental health needs and participate in district crisis response processes as appropriate. Collaborate with school-based and district teams to identify student needs, develop appropriate interventions, monitor student progress, and adjust supports based on student response and data. Consult and collaborate with teachers, administrators, counselors, psychologists, social workers, special education staff, and other service providers to support the whole child. Assist in the development and implementation of individualized social-emotional and behavioral interventions and support plans. Support positive behavior, emotional regulation, coping skills, relationship-building, resilience, school engagement, belonging, and other skills that promote student mental health and well-being. Partner with families to identify student needs, coordinate supports, and strengthen connections between home, school, and community resources. Connect students and families with community mental health agencies and other outside resources when needs extend beyond the scope of school-based services. Coordinate and collaborate with outside mental health providers, when appropriate and with appropriate consent, to promote continuity of care. Participate in student support, MTSS, problem-solving, and other multidisciplinary teams as assigned. Support district and building efforts to strengthen positive school culture, climate, belonging, and student well-being. Maintain accurate and timely records of services, interventions, referrals, progress monitoring, and other required documentation. Complete Medicaid documentation for eligible services, as applicable. Collect and maintain program implementation and student service data as required by Birmingham Public Schools and applicable state or grant requirements. Participate in professional learning, consultation, and program evaluation related to student mental health and behavioral health services. Perform other related duties as assigned based on district and student needs.
