Description of Work Provide academic instruction for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in their primary mode of communication within a residential education setting. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences 75%-Individual and small group instruction in academic areas such as reading, math, science, etc. as well as any non-academic areas, if necessary, which may be addressed by the IEP for students K-12 depending on placement at Supervisor's discretion. Effective instruction requires becoming knowledgeable about and implementing assigned curricula, implementation of daily-prepared lessons, utilization of acquired and accumulated materials, resources, and manipulatives as well as assessing and documenting students' progress and performance.
NOTE:
Lesson plans and/or assessment documentation will be supplied for review by supervisor upon request. 15%-Perform related activities such as: planning instructional activities; preparing IEP's, attending to individual problems relating to student progress, performance, or behavior; preparing report cards; supervising and instructing teaching assistants; gathering and /or preparing instructional materials; supervising student teachers and/or observers from various colleges; participating in school related activities; attending committee meetings and in-service workshops; planning and implementing field trips; administering formal and informal test/assessments. 5%-Communicate with other programs (residential, student support, etc.) on & off campus. Serve as liaison between the residential and academic staff, between academic staff and parents, between academic staff and local educational agencies, etc. and serve as resource person for other schools. Administering, proctoring, compiling, submitting any and all state mandated tests, portfolios, & inventories. State policies/procedures for testing are to be upheld at all times.
Other Position Characteristics:
This position has daily contact with a number of staff members, campus-wide, as well as the general public. The following list is a known list of duties it is not meant to be comprehensive: Daily contact with supervisor concerning duties to be performed Contact office concerning daily bus duty or Friday bus duty Daily student contact (giving out passes, getting students to appointments, getting information from students, etc.) Disseminating information on daily/weekly/monthly reports Completion of confidential information to other agencies, determining (with guidance when uncertain) what may and may not be released Receiving, compiling, filing and disseminating information from other on and off campus service providers pertaining to middle school students Assisting the supervisor in verifying and updating the campus inventory as it pertains to the middle school Accuracy Required in
Work:
Accuracy is required in following areas - understanding, effectively communicating and implementing the goals and objectives of the program and curriculum (state or alternate); ensuring IEP goals/objectives are implemented and documented appropriately.
Consequence of Error:

Direct instructions will be provided as needed by the supervisor verbally or in writing. The supervisor will conduct regular evaluations of employee performance and provide feedback on areas of excellence and /or weakness. Responsibility for daily supervision is by the academic program supervisor and/or School Director. Goals are established through the Individual Growth Plan. Routine and daily assignments are made orally and in writing by the supervisor. Policies, procedures, and directives established by and for the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf will be adhered to.
Variety and Purpose of Personal Contacts:
Daily contact with parents (when necessary) concerning scheduled meetings, concerns, behavioral issues, and needs of children Daily contact with other teachers/assistants concerning student records and/or data Contact with guests of the school and government officials (when necessary) Effective sign language skills, receptive and expressive, in order to communicate with deaf students, employees, parents, and visitors Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and tactfully with all people
Physical Effort:
Employee must have dexterity skills to use sign language Employee must have mobility and endurance to keep up with students and their movements around campus Employee must have mobility and the endurance to get down on and up off the floor with children if applicable and necessary Must have mobility and the ability to assist children with hygiene needs if applicable and necessary Depending on the individual needs of assigned students

Visual Attention, Mental Concentration, and Manipulative Skills:
Employee must have vision (with or without correction) within the normal functioning range for the purpose of reading and understanding sign language and for the purpose of supervising children. Employee must have the ability to express one's intent as well as instruct others through the use of sign language. Employee must have dexterity skills to use sign language.
Safety of Others:
Employee is responsible for ensuring students are safety at all times in all situations Employee is responsible for reporting concerns related to safety (student or staff) to the supervisor Employee must adhere to Directive 21 and attend appropriate sign language classes
