ABOUT FIRST CHURCH NEW BRITAIN
First Church New Britain is a welcoming Protestant congregation with roots stretching back to 1754. We are a community of faith rooted and grounded in God's love for all people — a place where diversity is celebrated and everyone is respected as a child of God. Affiliated with the Southern New England Conference of the United Church of Christ, we are guided by our mission to provide a caring, open environment where all are affirmed, supported, and encouraged to live their faith through service to others. Our life together is shaped by five core values: Diverse
  • We celebrate the unique attributes of all of Creation and seek to recognize and support the diversity of our city and surrounding community. Sanctuary
  • We aim to be a safe, inclusive space where people receive comfort through worship, prayer, and mutual care. Rooted
  • We bear fruit where we've been planted, creating connections with neighbors and community partners. Hospitality
  • All who come through our doors should feel genuinely welcome, valued, and appreciated. Fun
  • We aim to be a 'third place' in the City — a joyful gathering space that leaves people excited to return.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Children are not the future of the church—they are the church, right now. They deserve to be listened to and learned from. We are seeking a Children's Ministry Coordinator who believes that, and who can help us build a space where the youngest members of our congregation feel that truth in their bones. This is a role for someone who brings creativity, warmth, and genuine delight in children to the work of faith formation. The ideal candidate will be someone who can meet kids with curiosity and care, help them ask big questions in a safe space, and connect what happens in Sunday School to the everyday life of a child growing up in New Britain. Our Sunday School currently gathers on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month (September through June) for children in grades K-8. We are ready to grow this ministry — in depth, in imagination, and in welcome.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Faith Formation & Sunday Programming Plan and lead engaging, age-appropriate Sunday School experiences for children in grades K-8; plan and lead confirmation when necessary Design curriculum and activities rooted in curiosity, inclusion, and the core teachings of Jesus joyfully Integrate the congregation's core values (diversity, sanctuary, rootedness, hospitality, and fun) into the fabric of children's programming Be present during Sunday worship to support families and serve as a warm, familiar face to children and their caregivers. Family & Congregational Connection Build genuine relationships with the families of First Church Communicate regularly with families about upcoming programming, themes, and ways to continue faith conversations at home. Partner with the Minister to weave children's voices and experiences into the broader life and worship of the congregation. Help curate moments where children and adults worship, serve, and grow alongside each other. Community Engagement Help position First Church as a true community partner for families in New Britain. Identify and support opportunities for children and families to engage in service and mission consistent with the church's values. Bring energy, ideas, and enthusiasm for making First Church a place kids love to be.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for a person of warmth, creativity, and genuine faith.
Specific qualifications include:
Experience working with children in educational, faith-based, or community settings A heart for inclusion: this congregation is open and affirming, and we need a children's coordinator who fully embodies that welcome for children of all backgrounds, family structures, and identities. Ability to design and lead programming that is engaging, age-appropriate, and spiritually grounded. Comfort with the UCC's open, progressive theological tradition. Formal UCC background not required, but alignment with our values is essential. Reliable, self-directed, and able to manage a part-time schedule with professionalism and care. Background check required. Safe Church training will be provided if not already completed.
HOW TO APPLY
Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a cover letter, resume, and a brief description of their educational philosophy to Pastor Antonio Vargas, Jr at antonio.vargas@firstnewbritain.org. We welcome inquiries and conversations. First Church New Britain is an open and affirming congregation committed to equal opportunity in all aspects of our ministry and employment.
